Musk criticized accurate maps. Tesla is now developing its own navigation data for FSD.

FSD is better at handling navigation and parking. Therefore, Tesla is developing its own AI-powered maps that will integrate the experiences of the entire fleet with the driver’s preferences.
Tesla wants to avoid reliance on third-party maps
Tesla aims to have greater control over where its vehicles go and how they reach their destinations. For the FSD system, it is creating its own maps and AI-based navigation. These maps are intended to be developed using the experiences of the entire fleet.
The plan was unveiled by AI chief Ashok Elluswamy during the presentation of third-quarter 2026 results. He responded to a shareholder’s question about issues with speed limits, parking, and routes, asking why Tesla relies on third-party maps.
Elluswamy agreed that automakers should not rely on maps from other suppliers. The new solution aims to integrate map data with navigation and learning from the driving patterns of individual vehicles. Tesla wants to leverage the benefits of its fleet even for route planning.
Navigation to Adapt to the Driver
The most interesting feature for drivers might be customization based on personal preferences. Navigation is supposed to learn which routes a specific user prefers, while also utilizing insights from other cars. Voice command control is also being considered.
The first part of this new technology will arrive with FSD v15 and be used at the beginning and end of a drive. Reaching a destination or selecting a parking spot are situations where drivers care more than just reaching the correct address on the map.
In the coming months, the system is set to gradually take over additional navigation functions, parking capabilities, and target location handling. This reveals Tesla’s direction for development as well as the order in which these features will be deployed. However, a specific date for when all functions will be available has not yet been announced.
A reversal from Musk’s earlier statements? Not quite
The announcement reminded people of Elon Musk’s previous remarks. At Autonomy Day in 2019, he criticized autonomous driving’s reliance on highly accurate lane maps, arguing that such an approach made the system too sensitive to changes in its surroundings.
However, having its own navigation maps does not automatically mean a shift to this approach. Tesla has used maps for navigation in the past and now aims to reduce its dependence on external suppliers. The introduction of HD maps for driving does not confirm this shift.
The change is still important. Tesla wants to combine its own maps, navigation, and fleet experiences into one solution. Only time will show how much it will help with routing and parking. Additionally, the announcement itself does not mean an end to driver oversight in FSD.
