The European electric vehicle market is maturing, and manufacturers are increasingly realizing that battery capacity alone is no longer the most important selling point. Why? Because today’s customers expect greater flexibility, customization to their own needs, and a sensible balance between price and vehicle capabilities — says the Japanese manufacturer, which has announced expanding the electric Eclipse Cross lineup with two different battery configurations.

Two Batteries, Two Technologies

What’s changing? Starting in November 2026, customers will be able to choose between a new lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery with a capacity of 67 kWh and an improved nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery with a capacity of 89 kWh.

Regardless of the version, the vehicle retains a power output of 220 HP, the ability to tow trailers up to 1100 kg, and support for AC charging at up to 22 kW — according to the manufacturer’s website.

The new LFP battery was developed for drivers who spend most of their time in urban and suburban areas but still expect the ability to cover longer distances without issues. According to Mitsubishi, the range of this version is up to 472 km under WLTP testing. Charging from 15% to 80% takes about 24 minutes at a maximum charging power of 165 kW.

LFP and NMC

The manufacturer hopes that using LFP technology will allow it to offer a more affordable version of the electric SUV without compromising on its key features. This approach aligns with an increasingly popular market trend where manufacturers use LFP batteries to reduce the cost of electric vehicles.

Drivers who regularly cover long distances will be able to choose a version equipped with a new 89 kWh NMC battery. This battery replaces the existing 87 kWh battery and increases the model’s maximum range from 635 to 650 km according to WLTP standards, according to Carscoops.com.

The charging specifications have also changed. The Electric Cars Report states that the new battery reduces the time needed to charge from 15 to 80 percent to about 28 minutes. This is even nine minutes faster than with the previous battery. The maximum DC charging power is 150 kW.

As the manufacturer emphasizes, introducing two battery variants will allow customers to tailor their vehicles to their individual needs without sacrificing performance or practicality. Both the cheaper LFP version and the long-range variant maintain the same power output from the drive system as well as identical usability features.

5 years and 100,000 kilometers

Mitsubishi’s strategy also illustrates how manufacturers’ approaches to electrification are evolving. Rather than offering only the largest and most expensive batteries, brands are increasingly creating diversified portfolios that cater to both customers seeking cost savings and those aiming for maximum range on the road.

An additional advantage is the comprehensive warranty package. The Eclipse Cross EV comes with a five-year factory warranty covering up to 100,000 km, which can be extended to eight years or 160,000 km. The warranty on the traction battery lasts the same length of time. The manufacturer also offers 12 years of corrosion protection — a new strategy aimed at boosting the model’s competitiveness in the increasingly crowded European electric SUV market.

The Eclipse Cross EV has not yet received an official price list for Poland, but industry media are reporting prices from selected European markets. For example, the current version with its existing battery starts at 40,490 euros in the Netherlands, which translates to around 175,700 zł. For comparison, when it first launched there, the model cost 45,690 euros (about 198,300 zł), indicating a significant drop in the starting price. It is still unknown whether the updated Eclipse Cross EV will make its way to Polish dealerships and what its price would be in our market.

Competitors Are Not Sleeping

The new Mitsubishi will enter one of the most competitive segments in the European market. In the class of compact and mid-size electric SUVs, it will primarily compete with models that offer similar range and comparable practicality.

The competition also includes the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric, Peugeot E-3008, Opel Grandland Electric, and Ford Explorer EV. In particular, the Scenic and E-3008 are often cited as models that emphasize a combination of long range and family-friendly functionality. Chinese manufacturers are also gaining increasing importance. For example, the BYD Sealion 7, XPENG G6, and Leapmotor C10 show that new players are ready to compete not only on price but also in terms of technology, features, and range.

What does “Mitsu” have?

Against this backdrop, Mitsubishi tries to stand out with a simple and straightforward offering. Instead of offering multiple powertrain versions, the manufacturer provides two clearly defined options, at a time when matching the car to actual needs has become crucial for many customers.
