Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that, starting Monday, August 17, the support package for owners of combustion engine vehicles, CPN 2, will take effect. According to data from the Ministry of Energy, this is a highly unfair measure, as hydrogen cars have the highest operating costs, with electric vehicles being slightly cheaper (but still expensive). In contrast, combustion engine vehicles guarantee almost the lowest operating costs, at least for buyers who are very cost-conscious (in lower price segments).

Let’s start with a comparison of energy costs for cars with different types of propulsion (source, PDF file). What’s particularly striking is the low cost of driving on LPG, as well as the slightly higher expenses for compact models powered by diesel and gasoline. Those who buy an SUV must be aware that it comes with higher costs – though they likely have the means to cover them:

Electric cars don’t have any size-related advantages, as the manufacturers of the most cost-effective models on the market are only present in the D/D-SUV segment. Compacts have similar energy consumption to them, or more precisely, they regularly perform worse. As usual, the absolute worst choice is buying a car with hydrogen fuel cells, but who can stop the wealthy?

Let’s return to the main topic: the table clearly shows that buyers of gasoline-powered vehicles in Europe’s most popular segments (B+C) save significantly by driving at lower costs than electric vehicle owners. Meanwhile, starting Monday, August 17, as part of the CPN 2 package, the government has decided to reduce VAT to 8 percent and set maximum prices for fuels (95 octane gasoline at 6.41 zł/l, 98 octane gasoline at 7.2 zł/l, diesel at 7.37 zł/l).

There’s no logical conclusion here: either 1/ gasoline vehicle owners are already driving at the lowest cost (see: the Ministry of Energy’s comparison, which is part of the government!), so supporting them would be unfair, or 2/ something is wrong with this table, and everyone knows exactly what it means.

Appeal to the Ministry of Energy

We have always been and will continue to support those in greatest need. That’s why we hope the Ministry of Energy will act fairly. Since under the CPN 2 package we help owners of combustion engines, not electric vehicles, perhaps it would be worthwhile to account for electricity costs in the table according to AFIR directive recommendations, that is, by including charging from a home outlet? Then the quarterly summary will finally make sense and show that electric vehicles are indeed the cheapest to operate...
