According to Autocar, MG plans to launch the electric city car Go, a production version of the Go electric concept shown in the summer (article image). The vehicle is set to be manufactured starting in 2028 at a new plant in Spain. The Chinese parent company SAIC announced plans for the first European factory back in June.
The Go is expected to go on sale in September of next year and is based on the E+-platform, which is also used in the front-wheel-drive compact car 4 EV Urban. The design of this electric vehicle was developed at MG’s studio in London and features a retro-futuristic style.
The model is expected to be about 4.0 meters long, equipped with an engine producing 111 kW (151 HP) and a 43-kWh battery using lithium-iron-phosphate technology (LFP). No further technical details have been released yet.
Production in Ferrol, in northwestern Spain, is set to begin with an annual capacity of 70,000 vehicles. The facility has a maximum capacity of 120,000 cars per year, and according to the report, a second model might be added later. In the initial phase, the vehicles will be assembled from completely knocked-down kits (CKD) imported from China. As a result, the Ferrol plant will not include processes for stamping, body building, or painting at first.
Shifting production to Spain is intended to avoid EU import tariffs on electric vehicles manufactured in China. SAIC faces a tariff rate of 35.3 percent along with the standard 10 percent tariff. Spain is considered a preferred location for Chinese automakers due to low labor costs and government incentives.
