MG will manufacture the MG2 in Spain, its competitor to the Renault 5 and MINI Cooper.

The Chinese company SAIC will manufacture the next MG2 electric vehicle at its plant in Ferrol (A Coruña) starting from late 2028. This model will be a B-segment utility vehicle approximately 4 meters long, inspired by the MG GO! prototype. It has been compared to the MINI Cooper due to its retro aesthetic, round headlights, and large grille, although the brand states that its design is inspired by the 1960s and 1970s MGB GT.

By assembling the MG2 in Spain, the company can avoid the punitive tariffs imposed by the European Union on electric cars from China. According to La Tribuna de Automoción, the vehicle will initially be built using CKD (Completely Knocked-Down) kits imported from Asia. It is not clear whether production will eventually take place entirely on site.

In any case, the annual forecast is around 73,000 units. It will share a platform with the MG4 Urban, so we can expect it to have front-wheel drive (the standard MG4 has rear-wheel drive). The MG2 is set to debut in the second half of 2027, with the first units being fully produced in China, specifically at the Ningde plant (in Fujian province).

Since the Ferrol facilities will have an initial capacity of 120,000 units, it’s possible that a second model could be added later. One of the most likely candidates is the MG4 Urban; however, we shouldn’t rule out the possibility of it being a different model.

The MG2 will initially be manufactured in China

Jozef Kaban, vice president of MG’s Global Design Center, confirmed that the key features of the MG GO! will be carried over to the production version of the MG2. “This car will generate a lot of excitement and it will feel like MG is back in action.” It will have a more aspirational approach compared to the models currently sold by the Anglo-Chinese brand.

David Allison, MG’s product director in the UK, said, “Honestly, I think we can sell this car to people who might not pay attention to our current models, thanks to its strong appearance and design.” Its main competitors will include the aforementioned MINI Cooper, as well as the successful Renault 5, which is currently the leader in the electric B-segment market.

It is highly likely that the MG2 will feature a high-performance XPower variant similar to the MG4, which is set to compete with other electric hot hatches of similar size such as the Alpine A290 and MINI Cooper JCW E, as well as the CUPRA Raval VZ and Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI twins, and the Lancia Ypsilon HF/Opel Corsa GSE/Peugeot E-208 GTi triplets.
