MG Commercial debuts electric bus range for European public transport

At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Sunwin used the show to underline its European ambitions and to present a new electric bus portfolio under its MG Commercial brand. As the commercial vehicle and public transport sectors continue their shift towards low-carbon and increasingly digitalised mobility, the Chinese manufacturer is looking to establish a stronger foothold in Europe. In our interview at the show, Sunwin executives explained the technology behind the new buses, the company’s market-entry strategy and why they believe now is the right time to expand in Europe.

Marking MG Commercial’s official debut at one of Europe’s most influential commercial vehicle events, the brand presented two flagship zero-emission bus models in Hannover: the iEV12 electric city bus and the iEV12LE low-entry intercity electric bus. The two-model lineup expanded MG Commercial’s global product portfolio, covering both urban public transport and suburban and intercity applications, while underlining the brand’s ambitions in Europe’s electric bus market.

At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, we spoke exclusively with Sunwin’s product and management team about the thinking behind the new iEV12 series, its key technologies and operational performance – and about the company’s longer-term plans for the European market.

According to the Sunwin team, the two newly launched electric buses share the same MG gene, design language and intelligent manufacturing platform, with core differences lying in their application scenarios. The standard iEV12 is tailored for intensive urban public transit operations, while the low-entry iEV12LE is developed for Class II intercity and suburban transportation, balancing passenger accessibility, riding comfort and efficient commercial operation — a design perfectly adapted to diverse European public travel needs.

Power performance and endurance, the core concerns of European bus operators, have been fully optimised for local road conditions and climate environments. Equipped with a 489kWh high-capacity battery pack and advanced cell-to-pack battery technology, the iEV12 series achieves a maximum range of over650km under the e-SORT 2 test cycle. In real European road scenarios, the actual stable operating range reaches 400–500km, fully supporting full-day uninterrupted operation without repeated charging. To tackle Europe’s cold winter energy consumption pain point, the models support dual heating solutions of diesel heater and electric heater; the diesel heating solution causes no range loss, while the electric heater only consumes approximately 15% of battery life, effectively adapting to complex European seasonal environments.

In terms of core technological advantages, the new iEV12 series adopts a self-developed efficient powertrain control unit equipped with silicon-based technology, boosting overall energy efficiency by around 20% and significantly reducing daily operating energy consumption. The innovative battery layout places all battery units in the chassis without occupying passenger and low-entry spaces, guaranteeing a low-floor, high-accessibility body structure while delivering excellent driving performance with a maximum speed of 100km/h, fully meeting highway intercity travel standards. In addition to universal technological upgrades, Sunwin together with MG Commercial support fully customised vehicle design according to personalised operational needs of European customers, achieving scenario-based tailored services.

During the on-site interview, Mr. Ma Zhengang, CEO of Sunwin Bus, shared the brand’s strategic thinking behind entering the European market. He stated that driven by Europe’s stringent carbon neutrality policies and booming demand for clean public transport, 2026 is the ideal window for MG Commercial to launch electric bus products locally. Benefiting from Sunwin’s 20-year in-depth cooperative experience with European mainstream manufacturers including Volvo, the brand has long been familiar with European engineering standards and public transit operational requirements. Coupled with the mature iteration of current domestic new energy bus technology, MG Commercial’s electric products fully meet European market thresholds in terms of reliability, safety and sustainability.

For European operators’ key demands for after-sales service and spare parts guarantee, MG Commercial will rely on the mature global after-sales system of SAIC Motor Group in the initial stage to realise rapid spare parts supply. Meanwhile, the brand is independently building a professional local European service team and regional after-sales network to provide long-term stable technical support, vehicle maintenance and operational guarantee for local customers.

Looking ahead to the next five years, Sunwin clarified that brand credibility and user reliability will take precedence over market sales volume. The core goal is to build MG Commercial into a trusted long-term cooperative partner for European public transport operators through high-quality products and full-cycle services, steadily expanding the brand’s influence in the European new energy public mobility market.
