MG 07 received 31,000 orders in 10 days. The affordable SAIC sedan aims to emerge from the shadow of the MG4

MG began deliveries of the 07 model in China on September 1, 2026, after the number of reserved orders exceeded 31,000 units. The car made its debut on August 21 at the Chengdu Auto Show and has consistently offered a simple proposition: plenty of technology at a low price.

For MG, this is more than just a successful launch. The brand had one clear focus in its electric vehicles, the MG4, and now it is trying to build a second one.

31,000 orders and delivery starts. MG 07 made a strong entrance

According to the brand, MG 07 reached 10,000 confirmed orders within 1 minute and 57 seconds of the reservation system opening. About 10-11 days after its debut, the count surpassed 31,000 reserved orders, prompting the manufacturer to begin delivering the first units to customers.

It makes a good impression, though marketing and actual sales need to be separated. In China, rapid “locked orders” are an important sign of demand, but it will take several months to determine how much of this will turn into actual registrations and whether MG can maintain its pace after the initial wave of interest.

The price wasn’t set arbitrarily either. The starting price is 105,900 yuan during a temporary promotion, with regular prices ranging from 108,900 to 159,900 yuan, which is approximately $15,600 to $23,500. In other words, this is a car that costs less than half of the Xiaomi SU7 in China but is already comparable in size to the Tesla Model 3.

What kind of car is this?

The MG 07 is a liftback-style, highly stylized B-segment sedan according to Chinese classification, though a European reader would likely identify it more quickly as a mid-size D-class car with a fashionable fastback silhouette. The vehicle has a length of 4,886 mm, a width of 1,900 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,825 mm.

Stylistically, it’s clear whose influence MG is drawing from. A low profile, frameless doors, an active rear spoiler, and proportions that recall the Xiaomi SU7 or other new Chinese sedans emphasizing a “sporty” look. The difference is that this car is much cheaper.

In practice, the MG tries to give the customer the impression of a higher-class vehicle. It features 19-inch wheels, a front trunk with a capacity of 168 liters, and a rear trunk with a capacity of 697 liters. Higher-trim versions include zero-gravity seats, heating, ventilation, massage functions, a 21-speaker 7.1.4 audio system, and even a two-zone 30-liter refrigerator in the trunk area. It sounds like a list from an expensive car. The question is how well all of this will hold up after several years of use.

Two powertrains, seven variants

The MG 07 is available as a BEV and PHEV, totaling 7 variants. This is important because the brand isn’t focusing solely on electric vehicles. It also aims to attract customers who aren’t ready for fully electric cars yet.

The electric versions of the MG 07 use an 800 V architecture. The weaker variants have 176 kW and 300 Nm of power, while the more powerful ones deliver 235 kW and 350 Nm. Options include batteries of 67 kWh and 91 kWh, with claimed ranges of 610 km, 650 km, or 845 km under CLTC conditions.

This deserves a star. 845 km of CLTC range looks great on the slide, but CLTC is even more optimistic than WLTP. In Europe, this figure would drop significantly. Still, even after adjustment, it remains a car with an impressively strong price-to-performance ratio on paper.

The top EV version comes equipped with a CATL 91 kWh battery and 5C charging. The manufacturer also states that the 845 km variant is based on the 800 V platform. It is this configuration that drives much of the interest, as such a setup typically appears in significantly more expensive cars.

The PHEV features a 1.5-liter engine with 82 kW of power, an electric motor producing 152 kW, an electric range of 245 km according to CLTC standards, and a total range of up to 1,745 km under CLTC conditions with the tank and battery fully charged. The claimed fuel consumption after the battery is depleted is 2.91 l/100 km. Again, specifications on paper can be optimistic, but the electric range alone for this PHEV class is quite impressive.

LiDAR, Momenta, and electronics. MG adds what was previously missing.

The MG 07 is the first model in the brand’s lineup to come equipped with LiDAR and the first to feature the Momenta R7 driving assistance system. The manufacturer promises NOA capabilities in urban and highway conditions, parking in 9 different scenarios, along with 25 active safety features.

It also includes an Xheart X7 chip designed for advanced AI applications, as well as a cockpit based on the Qualcomm 8295P chipset with a 15.6-inch central display featuring a 2.5K resolution.

You’ll need a cool head too. In China, practically every major manufacturer is talking about advanced ADAS and urban NOA these days. The problem arises when marketing mixes driver assistance with autonomy. The MG 07 seems like a well-equipped car, but it’s still just assistive systems, not a self-driving vehicle.

The mix of orders is also interesting. According to the brand’s head, over 45 percent of orders were for versions with a CLTC range of more than 800 km. So customers didn’t flock to the cheapest variants. It seems MG got it right not only with pricing but also with configuration.

MG wants to repeat the success of the MG4, but this time without relying on just one model.

There is another important factor behind this launch. MG faced structural issues in its NEV business. From January to July 2026, the brand sold 92,428 electric vehicles, of which 83,910 were MG4 models. This accounted for nearly 90 percent of the total volume.

The MG4 saved the brand’s transformation but also made it dependent on a single model. In the first half of 2026, MG4 deliveries exceeded 70,000 units, with August alone seeing over 17,000 units sold for the MG4 and MG4X models. A year after its debut, cumulative deliveries for this lineup reached 150,000 vehicles.

The MG 07 adopts this strategy. Its formula is similar to the MG4: an attractive price, youthful design, plenty of technology, and strong specifications in its sales materials. The difference is that this time MG is entering the sedan segment, where competition is even more fierce, ranging from Tesla and Xiaomi to dozens of local brands.

The brand has been preparing for this from a sales perspective. Over the course of a year, it expanded its efficient network in China from less than 200 outlets to nearly 500, plus around 100 temporary stores. With such a surge in orders, this isn’t just convenient—it’s necessary.

The initial delivery dates also indicate that not all versions will reach customers right away. The model with a range of 650 km was supposed to launch at the end of August, while the 845 km version is scheduled for October. This is important because top configurations often look best in promotional materials but take the longest to reach actual production.

MG actually sells better abroad than at home, especially in Europe. At the beginning of 2026, the brand announced it had surpassed 1 million cumulative sales in the EU and the UK. If the MG 07 proves to be a lasting hit in China, questions about exporting it to Europe will arise quickly. However, given current tariffs on Chinese EVs and the fact that the model is also available as a PHEV, there are several possible scenarios.

As of now, the MG 07 seems like a very strong offering for the Chinese market, rather than a ready-made solution to dominate Europe. The specs are excellent, and the price is even better, but the real test will come when we see the delivery pace, actual waiting lists, and the first user reviews after a few months.

MG finally has another vehicle that can generate volume, but it now needs to prove that 31,000 orders weren’t just a one-time spike. What do you think? If the MG 07 were released in Poland as an EV or PHEV, would it have a better chance of making a bigger impact than the MG4?
