Mercedes is testing a new electric E-Class as the successor to the EQE

Mercedes is currently testing a new electric E-Class that is intended to replace the existing, standalone battery-powered model called the EQE. According to AutoExpress, citing recent photos, the new electric model will be released alongside a gasoline version with a similar design. The official launch of the new model series is scheduled for 2027.

The new development is intended to support Mercedes’ goal of integrating its electric and conventional model lines more closely. Unlike the aerodynamic design of the EQE, the new E-Class retains the proportions of a traditional sedan even as an electric vehicle. Its design features a longer hood along with a specific positioning of the driver’s seat and trunk lid.

However, the electric version and the internal combustion engine model will differ noticeably in the front end, according to the report. The electric version is expected to feature the new illuminated grille that has already been used in the latest all-electric versions of the GLC and C-Class. Inside, a large display spanning 39 inches across the entire cockpit width is anticipated.

The new Mercedes electric vehicle platform, MB.EA, offers structural advantages in the passenger area. A flat floor in the second row along with a more boxy roof design are intended to provide more headroom and improved space. According to AutoExpress, the target range is between 450 and 500 miles, which is roughly up to 800 kilometers. This might be achieved using a large battery with a storage capacity of about 110 to 120 kWh.

The market launch of the all-electric E-Class, expected next year, is set to include various powertrains, including a high-performance all-wheel-drive system with two electric motors. According to AutoExpress, there is also a possibility that the specially sporty axial flux motors from electric AMG models could be integrated. In that case, the E-Class with a pure electric drive could achieve over 1000 horsepower (736 kW) with appropriate design.
