Mercedes EQE discontinued, electric E-Class set to debut at IAA in 2027

The Mercedes EQE is no longer configurable. At the beginning of October, we counted five variants in the configurator, but now only existing vehicles are available. The EQE SUV is also no longer configurable, though one can register on the manufacturer’s website for “updates on the new EQE SUV.”

Various media outlets had previously reported that this five-meter-long electric limousine would no longer be offered in the 2027 model year. The reason for its discontinuation is said to be its aerodynamically unsound and unimpressive design, which failed to resonate with customers. With around 2,200 new registrations from January to September 2026, the model lagged far behind both the electric CLA (over 17,000 units) and the GLC (around 8,300 units) in Germany.

However, a replacement is on the horizon: an electric E-Class is set to launch in 2027. It is reportedly to be unveiled at the IAA in September, as JesMB reported recently. The vehicle is expected to use 800 volts and be based on the MB.EA platform in the “M” version, which is the mid-size variant also used for the electric C-Class. Initially, MB.EA-L was planned as the platform, but it has been put on hold or may not be developed at all.

The EQE was launched in mid-2022. Like the EQS, it is built on the EVA2 platform, and its design is similar as well. However, the EQE is 27 centimeters shorter than the EQS and has only a small trunk lid, while the EQS features a large rear hatch. Additionally, the EQS was recently upgraded to 800 volts.

Despite sharing the same platform, its wheelbase is also nine centimeters shorter, which means the large 118-kWh battery from the EQS does not fit. Moreover, its trunk capacity is smaller at 430 liters. The Mercedes EQE is produced in Bremen (as well as in Beijing for the Chinese market).

Batteries and Powertrains

When the EQE was introduced in September 2021, only two engine options were presented: the EQE 350+ and the EQE 43. However, the lineup later expanded to include up to six variants. The EQE 43 4Matic was discontinued in April 2025. At the same time, many versions received increased power output. Ultimately, five variants were available for configuration:

The largest battery in the EQE, with 96 kWh, is used only in the 350+ version. This results in a range of 691 km. There are also batteries with 90.6 kWh and 90.0 kWh capacities. The all-wheel-drive versions come equipped with a Disconnect Unit (DCU), which automatically disconnects the front axle when not in use to save electricity.

All variants can be charged using up to 170 kW of direct current or 11 kW (optionally 22 kW) of alternating current. Mercedes states that DC charging takes 32 minutes for all battery types. The EQE still uses a 400-volt system, although there have been discussions for some time about switching to 800 volts. In terms of voltage and charging speed, the Audi A6 e-tron has an advantage: the EQE charges at a maximum of 2.1 kWh/min, while the A6 e-tron can charge up to 3.2 kWh/min. To put it more vividly, the standard charging time from 10% to 80% takes 21 minutes for Audi and 32 minutes for Mercedes.

Cockpit and Regeneration

The interior is essentially the same as that of the EQS. Optionally, there’s the huge Hyperscreen, which actually consists of three displays under a cover glass. There are also two stylish air vents in a turbine design:

The regenerative braking strength can be adjusted in three steps using steering wheel paddles; the levels are called D+, D, and D-. In addition, there’s an automatic mode called D Auto, where the system makes the decision itself.

Prices, Competitors, and Test of the Mercedes EQE

The list prices for the Mercedes EQE started at around 67,000 euros. Since August 2024, Mercedes no longer publishes price lists online. The configurator shows two prices for each model: the list price (right below the model name) and the discounted price (top left, after selecting the relevant variant). Additionally, since summer 2026, users must choose between “Private Customer” and “Business Customer” at the top right. Here are the prices we retrieved from the configurator on October 2:

The competitors of the Mercedes EQE included the BMW i5 and VW ID.7 with 400 volts, as well as the Audi A6 e-tron and Volvo ES90 with 800 volts. The electric Mercedes C-Class and BMW i3 also offer 800 volts, although they are in a lower class.

Our colleagues in the U.S. tested the Mercedes EQE in its older “350+” version. Negative aspects were the materials, which are one tier lower quality than those in the EQS, and the rear door openings, which are somewhat small. Additionally, the knees of rear passengers touch each other. Regarding driving performance, our tester complained about wind noise at 80 km/h. On the positive side, the agility was noted thanks to the optional rear-wheel steering with a 10-degree steering angle. Overall, the EQE is a mature and modern option in the upper mid-class segment, according to the conclusion.
