The Polish premiere of the Mercedes C-Class in three variants: gasoline, hybrid, and electric. The latter is obviously the biggest novelty, named W540 in Mercedes’ nomenclature. The model launched is the C400 EQ 4Matic, delivering 489 horsepower with all-wheel drive. But this is just the beginning, as the C300+ long-range version with a WLTP range of over 900 km will soon be available as well. Shocking! But will the new Mercedes model threaten BMW’s i3 Neue Klasse? @mercedesbenz@mercedesbenz.polska#mercedes#c400eq #brend #premiere #newmodel #electric

Mercedes is consistently electrifying its most popular models. After the electric versions of the CLA and GLC, it’s now the turn of the C-Class, one of the brand’s core models. The new Mercedes C 400 EQ is the first electric sedan available in Poland, and its presence in the manufacturer’s configurator indicates that competition in the premium BEV segment in our country is becoming increasingly fierce. Importantly for many, the electric C-Class does not replace the gasoline version—it exists alongside it as a completely separate model.

One version to start with

The Polish price list starts with the top-tier C 400 EQ 4MATIC version. Two electric motors, one per axle, generate a combined power of 489 horsepower and 800 Nm, with power distributed to all four wheels. Unusual for an electric vehicle is the use of a two-speed transmission on the rear axle: the shorter first gear provides quick acceleration, while the longer second gear improves efficiency at higher speeds. The result? A 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.0 seconds despite a curb weight of up to 2460 kg. The front motor can be disconnected when additional power and traction aren’t needed—an easy way to reduce energy consumption, which the manufacturer claims (under laboratory conditions) ranges from 13.9 to 15 kWh/100 km.

94.5 kWh battery, 800 V architecture, and fast charging

The heart of the C 400 EQ’s powertrain is a battery with a capacity of around 94.5 kWh net (100 kWh gross), which works in conjunction with an 800 V architecture based on the dedicated MB.EA platform — the same one used in the electric GLC. Thanks to this, the Mercedes C 400 EQ can be charged using direct current at a power of up to 330 kW, allowing it to regain energy for nearly 325 km in just 10 minutes, while charging the battery from 10 to 80 percent takes about 22 minutes.

The declared WLTP range is 762 km, but this isn’t Mercedes’s final word on the matter. Next year, additional rear-wheel-drive versions of the electric sedan will be added to the lineup (including C 200, C 250, and C 300), along with the C300+, which corresponds to the “long range” variants. In this case, the WLTP range is expected to exceed 9,900 km. Additionally, the vehicle supports two-way charging, which allows it to feed energy stored in the battery back into the grid or home, depending on local regulations.

It’s worth stopping here for a moment. While the charging performance in the Mercedes is indeed impressive, there’s one small detail to keep in mind. To charge the C 400 EQ at stations that provide 400 V, you need to select the corresponding option in the configurator, which costs 2875 zł. Choosing this option allows charging at up to 100 kW on such chargers. Additionally, the manufacturer offers an optional more powerful onboard charger of 22 kW for AC charging. However, to use this one, you need to pay an additional 2875 zł (the same amount as for charging at 400 V stations).

New stylistic language and digital interior

The electric C 400 EQ also breaks away from the “oval” aesthetic of the EQE and EQS models. At 4883 mm in length, this sedan features a more classic silhouette and a vertically styled grille reminiscent of the brand’s older limousines, while maintaining a very low drag coefficient. This is the same styling we’ve seen in models like the GLC EQ, as well as the recently introduced GLB EQ and GLA EQ. Inside, screens dominate the cabin — in top trims, a wide display runs across the entire width of the dashboard.

It must be clearly stated that this is an impressive structure with a length of nearly one meter. Importantly, it is not divided into sections (except in the top variant), but rather forms a single large unit. Of course, questions arise about its practicality or the necessity of such a design, but that is a topic for a completely separate article. It’s also worth mentioning right away that in the base version, the three screens are separated by frames, and the monitor in front of the passenger serves only a decorative purpose without displaying any selected content.

299,900 zł is just the beginning

The starting price of the C 400 EQ sounds attractive for a Mercedes, but the base version lacks substantial equipment — relatively modest 18-inch wheels are standard. The Avantgarde styling package is included at no extra cost, while the AMG and AMG Plus packages cost 15,160 zł and 33,195 zł respectively. Additional options include the Comfort Plus package for 7,292 zł, along with a wide range of features priced from tens to hundreds of thousands of złotys (examples include MBUX Hyberscreen at 6,534 zł, the Premium Package with Digital Add-ons at 32,933 zł, or its upgraded version, Premium Plus Package with Digital Add-ons including MBUX and an almost meter-long screen at 50,707 zł). With all these options added, the total cost can easily reach 350,000 zł or even 380,000 zł — something to keep in mind when planning a purchase.

A Strong Rival from Munich

The most serious competitor to the electric Class C is the new BMW i3 50 xDrive, the first electric “three” in the Neue Klasse series. This Bavarian sedan costs from 290,000 PLN (the First Edition version starts at 331,900 PLN), delivers 469 horsepower, has a 108.7 kWh battery, and an WLTP range of up to 906 km, while also supporting fast charging at 400 kW. On paper, the BMW offers better range, though the actual charging times for both vehicles are similar. In the long term, the electric Audi A4 will also join the competition.
