Mercedes-Benz begins CKD assembly of the electric GLC in India

Mercedes-Benz has begun assembling the electric GLC using imported CKD kits at its plant in Chakan, near Pune in India’s Maharashtra state. Chakan is the second location for CKD assembly of the electric GLC, after Thailand’s Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant (TAAP).

The German premium manufacturer assembles in India solely the top variant of the all-electric GLC, unveiled in September 2025, the 400 4MATIC. This model was introduced right after production began and is available in only one trim level – the “AMG Line.” The price is 7.85 million rupees (approximately 73,800 euros), plus registration fees, insurance, and a one percent “Tax Collected at Source” (TCS).
The electric GLC is only about 2 percent more expensive than the base version of the GLC with a combustion engine, whose prices start at 7.70 million rupees (around 72,400 euros). While the 2016 model with a combustion engine is subject to a 40 percent “Goods and Services Tax” (GST), the electric version based on the MB.EA-M platform is taxed at just 5 percent. This has allowed the company to set its price very close to that of the combustion engine model.
On the occasion of the launch, Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said the company intends to begin delivering the electric GLC during the Diwali festival. This year, Diwali falls on November 8th and is traditionally considered a time when car sales — especially in the luxury segment — reach their peak. The company has already received over 1,000 pre-orders for the new electric vehicle in India. “This vehicle is sold out until March 2027. Therefore, I asked my board and colleagues in Stuttgart to provide us with more vehicles or vehicle kits so that we can expand production here,” said Iyer.
Senior executives from Mercedes-Benz’s global leadership team, including Supervisory Board Chairman Martin Brudermüller and CEO Ola Källenius, also attended the event. “The GLC is our best-selling model. It has been on Indian roads for a decade now, with over 22,000 units sold. I am confident that the electric GLC will build on this success. In fact, it has already kicked off at full speed: over 550 pre-orders in the first 36 hours — a new record for us in India,” said Källenius.
The electric GLC 400 4MATIC is equipped with two motors—one on each axle—that generate 360 kW of power and 800 Nm of torque. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/h. A 94-kWh battery pack, which can be charged at up to 330 kW, powers the motors and enables a WLTP range of 711 km—a figure also confirmed by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).
