Mercedes AMG: super SUV with over 1,000 CV

Mercedes AMG: super SUV with over 1,000 CV

Mercedes AMG introduces the new GT SUV, a large-scale sports model developed from scratch in Affalterbach. The highest-performance version combines three axial-flux electric motors with an 800-volt battery, offering a charging power of up to 710 kW.

The new Mercedes AMG GT SUV is the second model based on the high-performance AMG.EA electric architecture. Yet for this Affalterbach-based brand, it represents a significant milestone: it is the first full-size SUV developed entirely within its own facilities.

The range includes three versions – GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63 – with power outputs ranging from 544 to 1,169 horsepower. The GT 53 will be available soon, while the other two will arrive next spring.

Mercedes AMG GT Suv: 700 km range, 0-100 in 2.7″

The top-tier GT 63 model is powered by three axial flux electric motors. This technology offers a higher power density compared to traditional radial flux solutions. For this model, Mercedes-AMG claims a continuous power output of up to 1,169 HP (860 kW) and 2,000 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 2.7 seconds.

The high-voltage battery, with a capacity of either 128 kWh or 106 kWh, uses an 800-volt system and directly cooled cylindrical cells. According to Mercedes-AMG, this design draws from experience in Formula 1 and is intended to improve heat management. This factor is crucial both for performance and high-speed charging.

The manufacturer claims that this battery provides a maximum range of 700 km and a DC charging power of up to 710 kW. It also allows for recovering up to 450 km of range in 10 minutes according to the WLTP cycle. Of course, this figure depends on the availability of a compatible charging station.

Active Suspension and Functional Aerodynamics

The electric platform isn’t the only distinctive feature. The GT SUV introduces AMG Active Ride Control+, an active pitching and rolling stabilization system designed to regulate and limit body movements.

The goal is to compensate at least in part for the dynamic effects associated with the weight and height of a large SUV. The sporty driving position, lowered center of gravity, and relatively low silhouette all contribute to this setup. Meanwhile, lightweight construction solutions are intended to reduce the overall weight.

Aerodynamics also plays an important role in this vehicle. Among the features announced are an active roof spoiler and the Airpanel system, designed to adjust air flow behavior according to driving conditions.

The driver can still customize the car’s response through various driving programs and the AMG Race Engineer system, which allows adjustment of parameters such as accelerator response, cornering dynamics, and wheel slip.

There’s a digital sound system. Italian prices yet to be determined

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV exceeds 5 meters in length (5.08 m), featuring a low and sleek silhouette despite pronounced wheel arches and smoothly curved sides. The vehicle is 2 meters wide, 1.65 meters tall, with a wheelbase of 3.04 meters.

Despite its sporty design, the GT SUV offers a spacious trunk (607 liters), which can expand to 1,740 liters when the rear seats are folded down. An additional 78 liters of space is available in the front compartment.

The interior follows the style of AMG sports cars, complete with a 14-inch central display for the multimedia system.

For those who cherish the classic style, Mercedes-AMG has also thought of a special “sound experience.” The AMGFORCE Sport+ program actually reproduces sounds inspired by the brand’s V8 or six-cylinder engines, along with simulated gear shifts and vibrations felt in the seats.

In essence, it’s an emotional element that the manufacturer incorporates into its vision of electric sportiness.

So far, Mercedes has only announced the starting price for the GT 53 in the German market: 113,050 euros. An official Italian price list is not yet available. The GT 55 and GT 63, expected in spring 2027, will later complete the lineup.
