Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Electric SUV with up to 860 kW and 710 kW charging capacity

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Electric SUV with up to 860 kW and 710 kW charging capacity

Mercedes unveils the AMG GT SUV. It will be available in the same three versions as the AMG GT 4-door coupe: GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63. They share the same powertrains, but the two higher-performance versions feature a new 128-kWh battery.

The appearance of the AMG GT SUV closely resembles that of the AMG GT 4-door coupe. The design team aimed to combine GT elements with SUV features. The vehicle has a wide stance, muscular fender flares, and a heavily sculpted front hood. It also features the typical AMG grille with vertical bars that function as light strips here. The large Mercedes star is partially illuminated. The daytime running lights display a star on each side. At the rear, similar to its sibling model, there are six round taillights, each with a star.

The front bumper features active vanes that regulate the flow of cooling air. The GT 55 and GT 63 also come equipped with a rear spoiler that adjusts automatically to enhance stability and traction.

Inside, Mercedes uses a driver-focused cockpit with a 10.2-inch instrument display and a 14.0-inch touchscreen. Optionally, there’s also a 14-inch passenger monitor available. The panoramic glass roof can be switched from transparent to opaque. The GT SUV offers 607 to 1,740 liters of trunk space at the back, plus an additional 78 liters in the front compartment, both measured according to VDA standards.

Like the AMG GT 4-door coupe, the SUV is also built on the AMG.EA platform. As with that model, the two more powerful versions, GT 55 and GT 63, are equipped with three axial-flow electric motors, each connected to an input gearbox and silicon carbide inverters. To save electricity, the front motor can be disconnected using a disconnect unit when it is not needed. At the rear axle, two motors enable torque vectoring.

The base GT 53 model has only one electric motor per axle — conventional radial flux permanent magnet motors. Here too, the front unit can be disconnected using a Disconnect Unit. The electric motor at the rear axle is paired with a two-speed transmission. The shorter-gear first speed provides quick acceleration from a standstill, while the longer-gear second speed offers low consumption at high speeds.

The batteries consist of cylindrical cells with a 26105 format factor, meaning they have a diameter of 26 mm and a height of 105 mm. This is the same cell size as used in the 4-door coupe. Like the sibling model, the cells are directly cooled, meaning they are immersed in a non-conductive cooling fluid. An NCMA chemistry (nickel, cobalt, manganese, and aluminum) is used at the cathode, while graphite with a silicon content is used at the anode. The cells are housed in plastic modules. The 106-kWh battery uses 18 modules, whereas the 128-kWh battery uses 22 modules.

Charging occurs at up to 600 kW for the smaller battery and 710 kW for the larger one, with a current of 1,000 amperes. While the base model always comes with a 106-kWh battery, the GT 55 and GT 63 appear to offer a choice. At least, the battery capacity is listed as “106 / 128 kWh” in the specifications.

Based on the manufacturer’s specifications, we calculated the charging speed in kWh/min (large battery: 128 kWh × 0.7 / 12 min). Multiplying this value by 60 min/h gives the average charging power at a SoC range of 10 to 80%. The WLTP range also allows us to calculate a value for extending range (maximum 700 km × 0.7 / 12 min).

The GT 63 SUV comes standard with a new “AMG Active Ride Control+” suspension system, which is optional on the GT 55. It uses hydraulic dampers and adjustable air springs. The system is designed to reduce body roll in corners, as well as pitching motion during braking and acceleration. Mercedes claims it also provides high comfort on long distances and poor roads. Additionally, the SUV features rear-wheel steering.

The GT 63 comes standard with the "AMG Dynamic Plus" package, which is offered as an option for the GT 55. This includes the AMG Race Engineer feature known from the 4-door coupe, allowing adjustment of engine response, driving behavior, and traction via three dial controls.

In AMGforce Sport+ mode, all three models offer an artificial engine sound designed to mimic a six-cylinder engine in the GT 53 and a V8 engine in the two top-tier models. In this mode, users can also use a simulated transmission controlled via steering wheel paddles. Additional features include artificial seat vibrations and a shift indicator. There is also a Race mode with drift mode and Launch Control.

The base model GT 53 SUV is expected to be available for order starting October 20 at prices starting at 113,050 Euros. This makes the SUV version 2,380 Euros more expensive than the corresponding 4-door coupe. The top models GT 63 SUV and GT 55 SUV will follow in spring 2027.

In summary

The AMG GT SUV inherits many features from the 4-door coupe. This applies especially to the powertrains, while the batteries are sometimes larger. The new 128-kWh battery can also be charged extremely quickly: a maximum charging power of 710 kW is truly impressive — in this regard, the SUV performs significantly better than the 4-door coupe, which can only achieve 600 kW at most. However, such values are likely only available at very few DC charging stations, as 1,000 amperes must flow to achieve them.
