More privileges planned for electric light vehicles

The federal government has submitted the proposed amendment to the Electromobility Act (EmoG) to the Bundestag. The draft specifies that electric light vehicles in the L6e vehicle class will be able to enjoy the same municipal privileges as larger electric cars moving forward. This regulation applies only to purely battery-powered models, according to Electrified citing news agency SP-X.

L6e vehicles are lightweight four-wheeled motor vehicles with a top speed of 45 km/h. These “microcars” have a maximum of two seating positions and weigh no more than 425 kilograms when ready for use. Their power output is limited to 4 or 6 kW (5.4/8.2 horsepower), depending on the subcategory. Examples of such vehicles include the Opel Rocks and the Citroën Ami.

Legally, these vehicles occupy a special category as they are not considered passenger cars. They can be driven with an AM class driver’s license starting at the age of 15. A regular registration is not required; instead, an insurance plate is needed.

By joining EmoG, municipalities can offer these vehicles parking benefits or exemptions from access restrictions. Since L6e vehicles do not carry an E-plaque, the draft law proposes a plaque solution based on the insurance plate. A corresponding identification is required for these privileges.
