MB.Drive Assist Pro in Germany: Mercedes is ahead of Tesla

In short:

MB.Drive Assist Pro is a level 2 partially automated driving system according to the SAE classification, developed in collaboration with NVIDIA

The point-to-point driving feature will reach its first users in Stuttgart and Munich by the end of 2026

Orders across Germany will begin in the first half of 2027, including for the new electric CLA model

The system relies on the integration of MB.OS architecture, a computing unit with 254 TOPS of performance, and a set of 27 sensors

Mercedes-Benz bases its homologation on the new UN Regulation 171 (UN R171) regarding driver assistance systems (DCAS)

Mercedes with a strict schedule

Mercedes-Benz officially announced the market debut of its advanced urban autonomous driving system, MB.Drive Assist Pro, in Germany. The German manufacturer is ahead of its competitors by setting a firm timeline for introducing technology that enables automatic driving from the starting point to the destination. Selected drivers in Stuttgart and Munich will test the solution in urban conditions by the end of 2026, and ordering for MB.Drive Assist Pro will be available across Germany in the first half of 2027.

Mercedes: From parking to destination

Previous driver assistance systems have primarily worked well during monotonous driving on expressways and highways. The MB.Drive Assist Pro system takes these capabilities to a much more challenging environment, such as heavy urban traffic. After entering a destination in the navigation and pressing a button on the steering wheel, the car takes control of maneuvers throughout the entire journey – from leaving the parking spot, navigating complex intersections and lane changes, to stopping at traffic lights and exiting the highway.

Despite such advanced autonomy, it is important to keep in mind the formal aspects. According to SAE standards, this is a Level 2 system, which means supervised autonomous driving. The driver must constantly monitor the road conditions, keep their hands on the steering wheel, and bear full responsibility for the vehicle. However, MB.Drive Assist Pro allows for smooth steering adjustments at any time, ensuring natural collaboration between the human and the software.

Hardware Infrastructure and NVIDIA Hyperion Platform

Completing such a complex task requires massive computing power and a sophisticated detection system. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the hardware package includes as many as 27 external sensors:

10 cameras that monitor the environment around the vehicle

5 radar sensors that analyze the distance and speed of other objects

12 ultrasonic sensors that assist with maneuvers at low speeds

The central processing unit, integrated with the proprietary MB.OS operating system and NVIDIA Hyperion platform, is responsible for processing the enormous amount of data in real time. The computer can perform up to 254 trillion operations per second (254 TOPS), utilizing the Alpamayo Stack software and the Halos security package. Such substantial computing power enables continuous analysis of urban traffic dynamics and rapid response to unexpected road situations.

Sales Model and OTA Updates

Importantly for current and future customers of the brand, MB.Drive Assist Pro will not be an option that can only be ordered during the configuration of a new car at the dealership. Owners of vehicles equipped with the appropriate sensor package will be able to activate this feature remotely through over-the-air updates (OTA). This new technology will debut, among other models, in the electric CLA model of 2026.

MB.Drive Assist Pro in Germany: Mercedes overtakes Tesla - Mercedes AMG CLA 45 4MATIC5

Mercedes plans a flexible service delivery model. The manufacturer has announced a free monthly trial period in the Mercedes-Benz Store, allowing every user to test the software’s features. According to market reports from North America, access to MB.Drive Assist Pro over a 3-year period is priced at $3,950, but a monthly subscription option is also available.

UN regulations pave the way for across Europe

A key factor in rolling out MB.Drive Assist Pro on the Old Continent is compliance with updated legal regulations. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) team recently approved UN R171, which sets strict safety requirements for driver assistance systems (DCAS).

Harmonized legal frameworks allow Mercedes to certify its technologies more efficiently. In practice, this means that after a successful market launch in Germany, the manufacturer will be able to roll out autonomous driving features in other European Union countries without hindrance, without having to seek separate local approvals in each member state.

What does this mean for the market?

The announcement of a specific launch date for MB.Drive Assist Pro in Germany positions Mercedes as the leader in Europe’s technological race. While other manufacturers are still testing similar features or dealing with regulatory issues, the Stuttgart-based company has an established production schedule and a clear certification path. With the technology set at level 2, requiring driver oversight, it is possible to safely accumulate millions of kilometers of real-world urban driving data, paving the way for subsequent stages of full autonomy.
