Over 43,000 hybrids sold in Spain: Toyota’s leadership is shaken by the rise of this brand.

The fact that hybrids are the “absolute king” in terms of technology and sales is no longer news in Spain, as noted by the manufacturers’ association ANFAC. In October—a historic month with the best figures since 2008—98,487 passenger cars and TT models were sold, of which nearly 44%, or over 43,000 to be exact (43,314), were conventional hybrids.

Among these, as expected, the Toyota Corolla dominates Spain firmly. The world’s top manufacturer—whose practices conflict with the EU’s new policies—also leads the list of best-selling hybrids of the year, with the Corolla, Toyota Yaris Cross—read our review—and Toyota Yaris among the top five hybrids registered in our country so far in 2026. However, another brand is threatening its throne…

Toyota dominates in Spain, this Asian brand surprises everyone

With over 43,000 hybrids sold in Spain, the Toyota Corolla remains the top model in this technology category. Last October alone, it sold 2,143 units across its three body styles—ranging from 4.37 meters for the 5-door version to 4.65 meters for the longer models—powered by two hybrid engines producing 140 and 196 horsepower respectively.

So far this year, the Corolla also holds the top spot, with 21,400 units registered, just ahead of the Toyota Yaris Cross with 17,117 units sold, followed by the Nissan Qashqai with 15,004 units, the Toyota Yaris with 14,052 units, and the Volkswagen T-Roc with 13,316 units sold.

However, in October, an Asian brand has begun to threaten Toyota Corolla’s dominance, especially Toyota’s lead in hybrid sales in Spain: we’re talking about KIA.

Kia Sportage and Niro, eyeing Toyota’s throne

It has done this with two of its best-known and best-selling SUVs in Spain: the Sportage, which is 4.54 meters long and equipped with a 239 HP hybrid engine. It was updated a few months ago and, with its massive 587 L trunk space, has a fuel consumption of only 5.6 L/100 km. And then there’s the KIA Niro, which is 4.43 meters long and is now available only with a 139 HP hybrid engine, achieving a fuel consumption of just 4.6 L/100 km.

Well, in October, these two KIA models ranked second and fourth respectively in Spain’s hybrid market. The Sportage sold 1,613 units, while the Niro saw 1,418 units registered.

This is all the more notable considering that as of now, none of Kia’s models are among the best-selling hybrids for the entire year. This could change in the coming months if they maintain this level of sales.

Finally, it should be noted that after the Toyota Corolla and Kia Sportage, the Volkswagen T-ROC took third place among the best-selling hybrids in October with 1,572 units registered; Nissan Qashqai ranked fifth with 1,417 units.

Completing the top 10 of best-selling hybrids in October, in this order, are the Toyota Yaris Cross with 1,379 units, Peugeot 2008 with 1,328 units sold, Omoda 5 with 1,254 units, Toyota C-HR with 1,063 units, and Hyundai Kona with 1,015 units registered.
