MAN eTGX: New generation with 720 km range unveiled

MAN is introducing the new MAN eTGX, which significantly improves its range thanks to enhanced aerodynamics, higher regenerative braking, and a new battery generation. Also on display at IAA Transportation is an electric version of the TGE truck, developed in collaboration with partner Flux.

The Munich-based commercial vehicle manufacturer released as many as 15 press releases for IAA Transportation (September 15–20 in Hannover). One stands out in particular, namely the one about the MAN eTGX: Just under two years after the first delivery of this fully electric long-haul truck from Porsche’s plant in Leipzig, MAN has now updated the model.
Among many other improvements, the increased range is particularly exciting — thanks to better aerodynamics and especially a new battery generation. Previously, the MAN eTGX as a tractor-trailer could carry up to six battery packs, each with 89 kWh gross and 80 kWh net capacity — for a total of up to 534 kWh gross or 480 kWh net. With the new battery generation, storage capacity has increased: the new MAN eTGX can now store or utilize 92 kWh gross and 88 kWh net per pack. Thus, MAN delivers a significantly higher net capacity relative to the gross capacity, at around 95 percent. The NMC cell chemistry remains unchanged, and MAN continues to assemble the batteries in its own plant in Nuremberg. Additionally, it’s important to note that the size of the battery packs does not change.
In addition, a seventh battery pack can now also be installed in the tractor unit, something that was previously only possible in the chassis. However, this is only feasible on the MAN eTGX with a 6×2 axle configuration for the tractor unit (six wheels, two of which are driven). Up to six packs are also possible with a 4×2 tractor unit (four wheels, two of which are driven). The fact that the heaviest battery configuration with seven packs now requires three axles is due to the placement of the seventh (flatter) pack directly behind the cab, as well as payload and axle load requirements.
MAN eTGX with up to 616 kWh of net battery capacity
The new battery setup results in greater range. The new MAN eTGX 6×2 tractor unit, with a battery capacity of 644 kWh gross / 616 kWh net, can achieve a range of up to 720 kilometers according to the manufacturer, with “over 600 kilometers being a realistic typical range under everyday long-distance driving conditions,” says MAN. In this regard, the MAN eTGX surpasses even the newly introduced Volvo FH Aero Electric 6×2 a few weeks ago, which the manufacturer claims has a range of 700 kilometers and has since been regarded as the European champion for electric truck range.
In other configurations, there is also an increase in range: For the typical 4×2 tractor-trailer of the MAN eTGX, the company claimed a daily range of 500 kilometers at the launch of the first generation, with later specifications stating up to 570 kilometers (likely under ideal conditions). The new generation sees a significant improvement: With a 4×2 tractor-trailer equipped with six batteries and a total capacity of 552 kWh gross / 528 kWh net, the range increases to up to 660 kilometers, with claims that it will “far exceed 500 kilometers under real-world conditions in typical long-haul use.”

That’s all for the updates on batteries. The increased range of the MAN eTGX is made possible not only by this but also by a recovery system that has been improved by up to 20 percent, as well as an enhanced design. This includes a vehicle front that has been moved forward by 120 millimeters, allowing MAN to effectively utilize EU length requirements for zero-emission vehicles to optimize aerodynamics and safety, according to the company.
The even larger battery has an impact on the curb weight of the now most range-extensive version of the eTGX: MAN stated 12.7 tons upon request at its booth, compared to 10.6 tons for the eTGX with six battery packs. The payload also varies accordingly: For the heavier eTGX, considering a standard trailer and a permissible total weight of 42 tons, there is roughly 22.5 to 23 tons available for cargo transport. The eTGX with six packs offers about two tons more.
A Major Step Forward for Long-Haul Transport
MAN plans to start accepting orders for the upgraded electric trucks in April of next year, with first deliveries scheduled for late summer 2027. “With the new MAN eTGX, we are taking another major step toward decarbonizing long-haul transportation. The combination of a new battery generation, increased range, megawatt-level charging, and a design focused entirely on efficiency delivers tangible economic benefits to our customers in their daily operations. At the same time, it improves visibility and thus enhances safety for all road users,” says Alexander Vlaskamp, Chairman of the Board of MAN Truck & Bus.
Vlaskamp refers to the Megawatt Charger as the company’s offering of the eTGX – even in its current generation – equipped standard with MCS connectors since July. This enables a charging capacity of 750 kW, while the eTGX with regular CCS connectors charges at 375 kW.
Production-Ready Electric Transporter TGE electrified Unveiled
Shifting from the higher-end to the lower-end of MAN’s portfolio: At IAA Transportation, the brand part of the Traton group also showcases two production-ready
innovative vehicles that have been electrified in collaboration with its Swiss development partner Flux. Both are based on the TGE transporter, which has previously been available only with combustion engines, and is a sibling model to the Crafter from Traton’s parent company, Volkswagen.
Together with Flux, both vehicles were developed for specialized applications that require a higher overall vehicle weight, all-wheel drive, and electric auxiliary drives. These include emergency services, fire departments, and municipal operations that have previously only been able to be partially electrified.

The two vehicles displayed in Hanover have a maximum gross weight of 4.0 and 5.5 tons respectively. This allows them to carry a payload of up to 2,500 kilograms (for the 5.5-ton model) and a towing capacity of up to 3,500 kilograms. The battery installed has a gross capacity of 119 kWh, enabling ranges of up to 480 kilometers as well as DC charging at up to 140 kW. This allows for a fast charge from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

MAN is already working alongside Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge on
the next generation of the MAN eTGE, which was introduced in 2024. The partnership with Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge remains a key element of the TGE’s product development across all powertrain options, according to MAN. However, both a new MAN eTGE and a new Volkswagen e-Crafter are likely to arrive only in 2028.
