Major EV charging rollout underway at 254-apartment building in Canberra

Major EV charging rollout underway at 254-apartment building in Canberra

Sydney based e-mobility company Nox Energy is currently in the process of fitting out Australia’s second-largest electric vehicle (EV) enabled apartment building, installing charging infrastructure across the building’s car park.

Set in the heart of Canberra, The Griffin apartment building’s car park is being fitted out with the underlying charging infrastructure necessary to be able to install EV chargers in each parking space.

The charging infrastructure will in turn allow owners of the 254 apartments the option to install a Nox EV charger in their designated parking space. Already over 90 residents have opted in to pay for and install a NOX Energy Intelligent Power Socket (IPS) – a smart socket that has been specifically designed for residential strata, commercial lots, and public parking spaces.

Nox Energy’s IPS allows for EV charging infrastructure to be installed in places where the EV owners charging their cars don’t own the building or location where they are charging – such as apartment buildings.

Instead, consumers pay for the IPS and all subsequent charging. Nox Energy’s management system tracks payments and relevant tariffs, before reimbursing the meter proprietor at the end of each billing cycle.

The first infrastructure installation phase at The Griffin is now live, with the full building rollout schedule to be completed by the middle of the month.

Residents at The Griffin can therefore opt in at their own pace down the track, with additional IPS chargers easily connected to the new infrastructure without a costly building-wide retrofit. Residents can also access the MSI EZgo 15A portable charger, compatible with the IPS, at a reduced price.

“At The Griffin, over 35% of residents have already opted in to pay for and install a Nox Energy IPS in their own parking space, many of whom do not yet have an EV,” said Alena Nolan, head of sales at Nox Energy.

“That is a strong commitment from this community and shows how much residents value the ability to charge at home.

“By installing the backbone across the car park now, we can connect more residents as demand grows. Whether they choose an EV today or in years to come, the infrastructure will be ready.”

The installation at The Griffin is part of Nox Energy’s Accelerating EV Adoption: Unlocking EVs for Strata Residents program, which is backed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s (ARENA) Driving the Nation Program. Announced in September of last year, ARENA committed $1.51 million to the $4.78 million project, which seeks to install nearly 2,000 IPS smart sockets across 16 apartment buildings around Australia.

The Griffin is the second strata building to be fitted out by Nox Energy, following the installation of charging infrastructure at the Sierra Hawthorn in Melbourne back in March.
