The development of the Volkswagen Golf electric vehicle has been officially suspended.

The development of the Volkswagen Golf electric vehicle has been officially suspended.

Originally scheduled for 2028 and then pushed to 2030, the Volkswagen ID. Golf has now been officially put on hold. This was announced by VW’s CFO, David Powels, during the press conference presenting the second-quarter results for 2026. “A specific measure is therefore to temporarily suspend development work on the future ID. Golf until we can ensure the necessary investments,” said the German executive.

This is an unusual move for a manufacturer that has repeatedly emphasized the importance of electrification, but we know how Volkswagen wants to cut costs by prioritizing discipline, even at the expense of production.

Postponed, not canceled

To be clear: the announcement does not mean the Volkswagen ID. Golf has been canceled. Powels actually emphasized that the suspension is temporary, leaving the door open to resume development of the electric Golf once the necessary funding is secured. However, the question remains as to when work will resume.

Volkswagen’s most challenging electric vehicle

The story of the Volkswagen ID. Golf is long and full of challenges. Announced in 2024, it was initially scheduled for 2028, then postponed to 2029 and later to 2030. At the heart of the problems has always been VW Group’s new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) — a completely new software-defined architecture intended to serve as the foundation for all electric vehicles across various brands — though it turned out to be more complex than expected. Its debut is now expected under Audi and Porsche models, before being used for Volkswagen vehicles as well.

There once was an electric Golf

An electric Volkswagen Golf is not new to Wolfsburg. The first (and so far only) battery-powered version of this German compact car was introduced in 2014, based on the MQB platform. It remained on the market until 2020, after which it was replaced by the ID.3, which is built on the MEB platform and designed as a 100% electric vehicle.
