A wading depth of over 70 centimeters and a towing capacity of up to 1,800 kilograms are not typical figures for a crossover, but they define the OMODA X, the new SUV from Chinese automaker Chery. It has just made its global debut with a design that blends sporty lines with off-road features.

It is positioned as OMODA’s first camper-style crossover, a segment previously dominated by its sister brand JAECOO, with which it shares dealerships. Interestingly, it doesn’t stop at just looking the part: it will come in electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid versions, with global launch set to begin around 2027.

A design with nods to the countryside

OMODA X Delantera

OMODA introduces the ‘Crossvolution’ design language with this model, featuring a robotic aesthetic that the brand calls “Mecha.” The front features sharp daytime running lights and geometric lines. The wheel arches are wide, the roof slopes backward, and the rear LED lights are shaped like lightning bolts.

Camper-inspired details are evident: 19-inch black tires, yellow accents, and Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires. The sides and rear pillar display the Mecha and Off-Road logos. The paint, called Progloss Plus Clearcoat, resists scratches and can self-repair.

Dimensions and off-road capabilities of the lightweight SUV

OMODA X Rear

The OMODA X will fall between segments C and D in size: it measures 4,654 millimeters in length, 1,920 millimeters in width, and 1,702 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 millimeters. It has 200 millimeters of ground clearance, can cross water up to 700 millimeters deep, and can tow up to 1,800 kilograms. The roof can support a load of 75 kilograms.

These specifications suit those who want to tow a caravan or carry bikes on the roof without resorting to a pure SUV. A key detail missing for assessing its off-road capability is whether it will have all-wheel drive, though we can assume it will given the brand’s focus and the presence of 4x4 configurations in models like the OMODA 9.

Three powertrains, with data still provisional

The OMODA X is available in three versions: electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and conventional hybrid (HEV). Chery has not yet released the complete technical specifications for the production version. According to the information presented, the electric version would use a 74 kWh battery, while the plug-in hybrid would use one with 20 kWh capacity. A 20 kWh battery is substantial for a plug-in hybrid, suggesting good electric range. But without official figures on power, range, or charging times, we must wait to see how it compares to its competitors.

A mechanical-air interior

Inside, the driver’s seat is called the Mecha Starship Cockpit. The driver and passenger have a symmetrical layout, and the central console is X-shaped, featuring metallic-looking physical controls, rotary dials, and a red start button, just like the OMODA 4. There’s a 10.25-inch digital display, a 13.2-inch central screen, and up to 39 specimen holders.

Among the features is a thermal vision system that can detect objects up to 90 meters away, designed to assist in low-light conditions. It also has a customizable driving mode called X-Mode, a karaoke function that captures voice without a microphone thanks to four independent audio zones, and a magnetic NFC accessory called Mecha Pet.
