The ID.Buzz camper version is shown in person
Volkswagen unveiled the new ID.California Cruise at the Caravan Salon, the first model in a future lineup of fully electric campers. Derived from the ID.Buzz, this van comes equipped with features designed for camping and road trips, including modular solutions and a V2L power output of up to 3.6 kW. First deliveries in Germany are scheduled for early 2027.
The ID.Buzz transformed into a camper
The ID.California Cruise marks Volkswagen’s first step toward a range of fully electric campers. It is based on the ID.Buzz platform, but its interior has been modified to provide the necessary features to turn the van into a camping vehicle suitable for longer journeys.
The system was developed by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in collaboration with Stuff Bubble, a company specializing in inflatable camping solutions. The goal is to keep the vehicle’s configuration relatively flexible: the camping components can be stored inside the vehicle when not in use.

A bed over two meters long and modular space
Up close, the central element of the setup is a foldable bed for two people, 2 meters long and 1.20 meters wide. The system can be opened quickly, creating storage space in the lower area.
The equipment also includes darkening curtains for the cabin and ventilation grilles for the front side windows. These features are designed to make overnight stops more comfortable.
Volkswagen also includes two camping chairs and a table, with the overall setup aiming to allow all necessary items to be carried onboard without permanently converting the ID.Buzz into a traditional camper.
The battery as an external power source
In a camper, this means being able to connect any small household appliances, a computer, or other electrical equipment. The same function can also be used to charge a bike or an electric unicycle, effectively turning the van into a mobile battery.
Two configurations and specific functions for travel
The California Cruise will be available in short or long wheelbase versions, following the configurations already offered for the ID.Buzz.
Volkswagen has also introduced a new “California Mode” designed for overnight stops and specific features in the California app for electric vehicles. These include the ability to locate and plan routes considering charging stations, which is particularly important for an electric camper.
Volkswagen has not yet disclosed all the final technical details of the model, but its close relationship to the ID.Buzz Pro helps to outline its specifications.
The short-wheelbase version uses a 79 kWh battery and can achieve up to 461 km of WLTP range, while the long-wheelbase version features an 86 kWh battery and reaches up to 487 km.
The announced price for Germany starts at 60,761 euros, with first deliveries expected in the early months of 2027. For the Italian market, however, the availability of the specific California Cruise version and its related commercial configuration remain to be determined.
