LichtBlick is installing fast charging stations with battery storage.

LichtBlick is using energy storage systems for the first time in its QuickCharge HPC charging network: Two new locations have been added in Stralsund and Heiligenhafen, equipped with Sungrow storage units. Thanks to these on-site battery buffers, users can charge their electric vehicles quickly there even with limited grid capacity.

According to LichtBlick, the battery storage systems at these two charging parks each have a capacity of 330 kilowatts and a storage duration of two hours. The initiators claim they enable “high charging speeds despite limited grid connection capacity.” Additionally, they help balance peak loads and ensure efficient operation of the charging infrastructure.

"Especially in regions with limited grid capacity, battery storage can help e-vehicle owners charge their vehicles quickly and comfortably," says Simon Schröder, project management leader at LichtBlick eMobility. "For us as operators of charging infrastructure, this is important to provide customers with a reliable charging experience. Wherever battery storage can meaningfully complement the construction of new charging infrastructure, we are considering its use." Currently, LichtBlick’s QuickCharge network includes 27 locations at various Famila, Markant, and Edeka stores in northern Germany.

The battery storage facilities in Stralsund and Heiligenhafen are part of LichtBlick’s strategy to better integrate charging infrastructure with flexibility solutions. The company plans to invest over 100 million euros solely in the electric mobility sector by 2030, according to its own statements. Additionally, LichtBlick is currently building a large-scale battery storage facility in Röhrsdorf near Chemnitz with a capacity of around 100 megawatts and a storage duration of four hours. The goal is to relieve electricity grids while providing additional flexibility for an increasingly renewable energy system, the company says.

LichtBlick was founded in 1998 as an energy provider focused on renewable and smart electricity. For some time now, in addition to energy and heat, the company also offers mobility solutions. For instance, LichtBlick operates the aforementioned QuickCharge charging network and is responsible for several solar projects. In the future, LichtBlick plans to integrate more battery storage systems into its services. The company, headquartered in Hamburg, currently employs around 700 staff members.
