The Volvo EX30 gains a very practical feature thanks to a simple remote update.

Through over-the-air updates, Volvo is enhancing the features of several of its electric models. For example, the EX30 now comes with V2L functionality, which allows it to power external devices up to 3 kW, while the EX60, EX90, and ES90 receive new connected safety alerts.

In 2026, there’s no need to wait for a restyle to see a car evolve. With over-the-air updates, some manufacturers can now upgrade their models just a few months after delivery. Volvo provides another example with several new features rolled out across its electric lineup.

The Volvo EX30 finally gets V2L

The main new feature relates to the Volvo EX30. A software update will enable it to use its traction battery to power external electrical devices directly. All that’s needed is to connect an adapter to the charging port and then plug in the desired equipment: coffee maker, fridge, stoves, etc.

This function, known as Vehicle-to-Load or V2L, can deliver up to 3 kW at 16 amps. Volvo states that the system automatically cuts off power when the battery level drops below 20%, to preserve a reserve for continuing the journey. Several competitors, such as Hyundai, Kia, and Renault, have already offered this feature. Its inclusion in the EX30 helps close this gap.

Volvo states that the update will be gradually deployed globally for free. The EX30 also features Plug & Charge in certain European markets, including France. With a compatible charger, authentication and payment can be handled automatically as soon as it’s plugged in, without the need to use a card or open an app.

Updates Coming for the EX60, EX90, and ES90 Too

Volvo is also upgrading its EX60, EX90, and ES90 models with several new connected safety features. These models will be able to alert the driver when an accident, construction work, animals, or pedestrians and cyclists are detected along the route.

The principle relies on information sharing between connected vehicles and road infrastructure. Volvo already uses this technology to alert about slippery roads or the activation of hazard lights on another vehicle. It’s both reassuring and practical!

Lastly, the EX90 and ES90 models equipped with Bowers & Wilkins audio systems now also feature Spatial Audio compatibility with Apple CarPlay. These are minor improvements, but they highlight how software updates are playing an increasingly important role in modern cars.
