The most used charging stations: Ionity ahead of Tesla and Fastned
The data was published, with satisfaction, by Ionity’s leader, Jeroen Van Tilburg. His company ranked first both in terms of average charging sessions per station (894.1 charges) and as the station with the highest record. That was Köschinger Forst on the A9 between Munich and Nuremberg, which saw 1,952 charging sessions per station in the quarter, meaning around 21 cars per charger per day. In the ranking included in ChargePointRadar’s Lademarkt-Report (covering over 175,000 public charging stations), Ionity outperformed three highly competitive rivals. Tesla came in second with its Superchargers (659.5 charges), followed by Fastned (526.5) and EnBW (513.0). These impressive figures indicate a market that is now mature. In Germany, nearly 900,000 electric cars were sold in September.
“Success isn’t measured by the number of charging stations.”
"Every fast charging station requires a network connection, permits, and years of operational costs," commented van Tilburg. "And those costs remain the same whether 21 cars stop there daily or just 2. That’s why I don’t measure the success of a charging network solely by the number of plugs. What matters is having the right chargers in the right places—on routes people actually drive, at stops they would make anyway, with enough power for cars arriving afterward. German data now show how valuable the right location is. I’d be curious to see similar figures for the rest of Europe." We would be too, especially regarding Italy—a market still lagging behind, where charging operators continue to complain about low usage of their stations while keeping detailed records strictly confidential.
