German company ZF launches over 100 kits for repairing electric motors

A worn-out bearing does not necessarily require the replacement of an entire electric motor. This is the principle behind ZF’s new strategy, which introduces over 100 variants of repair kits for electric and hybrid powertrains. The goal is to enable workshops to address individual components, reducing costs and the amount of material that needs to be replaced whenever possible.
This issue is particularly significant for electric vehicles, where the integrated design of some powertrains can make it more complicated to repair individual components. In fact, it is not uncommon for when a mechanical or electronic component fails properly, the only option in certain configurations to be the replacement of the entire motor, resulting in substantial costs for repairs.

Over 100 Repair Kits
The German multinational ZF has introduced over 100 variants of repair kits, such as the Repair Kit RD, designed to address issues with bearings in the reducer connected to the electric motor. These components are subject to high loads and rotational speeds, and their deterioration does not necessarily mean the entire propulsion system is faulty.
The availability of specific spare parts and related technical documentation allows mechanics to focus repairs on the actually damaged component rather than automatically replacing the entire unit.

ZF: From electric to hybrid, more components available for repair
This initiative isn’t limited to battery-powered vehicles. ZF plans kits for certain systems used in hybrid cars as well, including components such as inverters and mechatronic systems.
This approach is likely to become increasingly important as Europe’s electric vehicle fleet ages. The first generations of modern electric cars are gradually reaching a stage where maintenance and repair outside official service centers become practical concerns for owners and independent workshops.
The real savings? It depends on prices and compatibility
It is still too early, however, to quantify the economic benefits of adopting these kits. ZF has not yet provided a complete list of compatible vehicles, the prices of spare parts, or the time required for labor.
These figures will undoubtedly be crucial for understanding the real impact of this initiative. It goes without saying that a repair kit is only interesting and advantageous if the total cost of the repair, including specialized labor, remains significantly lower than replacing the entire unit.
The market for refurbished components still shows that there is a real opportunity to reduce costs. For some repurposed electric motors used, for example, in the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV, the price can be significantly lower compared to a new component from an official supplier.
