The diesel drivers' defeat: 30 euros more per fill-up

the defeat of diesel drivers

Europe, led by Germany and Italy, is particularly vulnerable to high diesel prices as it is the world’s most dependent region on this fuel. Four out of 10 cars in the EU are diesel-powered, and 30% of these are over 15 years old. The vast majority of diesel consumption is related to road transport, with a significant portion also used for freight movement. For truck drivers, this translates into additional costs of over 236 euros per week. Drivers are not faring any better either: a fill-up now costs 30 euros more, according to a T&E study. Those benefiting are the oil tycoons, especially refineries, which are recording record profits. In the first six months of 2026, eight major companies earned 7.5 billion euros in extra profits solely in the EU at the expense of consumers.

With the geopolitical crisis still far from a resolution, T&E calls on Europe to accelerate the shift to electric vehicles immediately. This should be achieved through incentives for vehicle retirement and stricter emission rules to reduce dependence on diesel, while protecting drivers and businesses from prolonged high prices. Andrea Boraschi, Director of T&E Italy, explains: “The decision made over decades to rely solely on diesel is now turning against Europe. Pump prices are straining consumers, and rising transportation costs immediately affect the cost of many other goods and services. It’s a cruel irony that the United States, the source of this crisis, is the least affected country, while the European economy once again bears the consequences. The solution is clear: every diesel car replaced by an electric one means a thousand liters of oil saved.”

“Save yourself this year.”
