Checking a route on Google Maps or Waze while driving on the road does not necessarily constitute a violation. However, certain common actions such as expanding the map, entering a new address, or changing the itinerary can result in a fine of 200 euros and the loss of up to 6 points from your driving license, depending on how the phone is used.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) makes a distinction between checking navigation directions and manipulating the device while driving. According to El Economista, the agency allows the use of these applications under certain conditions, though it reminds that the restrictions also apply when the vehicle is temporarily stopped at a traffic light or in a traffic jam.

Up to 6 points for using a mobile phone: situations penalized by the DGT

The highest penalty applies to those who hold the phone in their hand while driving, regardless of whether they are using a navigation app. This behavior is punishable by a fine of 200 euros and a loss of 6 points, while manually operating a navigator mounted on a holder results in the same fine amount but with a deduction of 3 points. Both violations are specified in Annex II of the Traffic Law.

The prohibition also does not end when the car stops due to traffic conditions. Entering an address in Google Maps, responding to a notification, or changing the route while waiting at a traffic light can constitute a violation, as the driver remains part of the traffic flow. To perform these actions without risking a penalty, it is necessary to park the vehicle properly in an allowed area.

Google Maps and Waze are still allowed, but with conditions

The use of these applications remains legal as long as navigation does not require manual intervention during driving. The DGT allows the phone to be mounted in a suitable holder, with the destination pre-configured and navigation instructions activated. Voice guidance and automatic traffic alerts can also be used, provided they do not distract the driver.

The placement of the device also matters. Article 18 of the General Traffic Regulations requires maintaining the freedom of movement, field of vision, and attention necessary for driving. Therefore, installing the phone in a position that hinders visibility of the road can result in a separate penalty, even if the screen is not touched.

These restrictions stem primarily from the reform introduced by Law 18/2021, which took effect on March 21, 2022, and tightened penalties for holding a mobile phone while driving. The amendment to the General Traffic Regulations implemented on October 1, 2026, has not changed the sanctions related to manually using navigation apps. Therefore, current regulations still allow the use of Google Maps or Waze, but require that routes be set before starting the journey and that any manual manipulation be avoided while driving.
