Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt: Electric cars traveled significantly more miles in 2025 than the previous year

The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has released the latest results from its “Distance Traveled” series. This statistic examines the differences in mileage between major vehicle inspections since the 2023 reporting year. According to these figures, in 2025, the total mileage of vehicles registered in Germany was 674.7 billion kilometers, representing a 0.7 percent increase from the previous year (670.2 billion km). Cars accounted for the largest share, at 562.3 billion kilometers, which constitutes 83.3 percent of the total mileage.

A significant increase in annual mileage was observed for purely battery-electric cars compared to the previous year (+25.8%). With 11,312 kilometers, electric vehicles had a higher average annual mileage than gasoline cars (8,406 km in 2025).

Hybrid cars without plug-in hybrid models also saw a similarly high increase in annual mileage (+26.2% compared to 2024), averaging 13,526 kilometers per year. In contrast, the average annual mileage of plug-in hybrid cars with longer electric ranges and a charging port for external charging decreased by 4.9% to 13,575 kilometers compared to the previous year.

Nearly half of the annual mileage for passenger cars (47.4%) was covered by gasoline-powered vehicles in 2025, with another 35.4% coming from diesel-powered cars. However, compared to the previous year, the annual mileage for gasoline cars decreased by 1.3%, while that for diesel cars dropped by 4.1%.

For trucks with a maximum allowable gross weight of over 3.5 tons, the annual mileage decreased by 3.3% to 14.9 billion kilometers compared to the previous year. Additionally, a decline in annual mileage was observed for tractor-trailers (-1.8% compared to the previous year). Nevertheless, tractor-trailers still had the highest average annual mileage at 67,479 kilometers (+1.2% compared to the previous year).

In the “Traffic in Kilometers” series, the Federal Motor Transport Authority publishes a brief report along with tables showing domestic vehicle mileage. The data source consists of information on odometer readings collected by technical inspection stations and monitoring organizations during regular vehicle inspections. Estimates for all vehicles registered in Germany are derived using a modeling approach developed as part of the “WeiterFahrt” project.
