The Kia EV2 once again shows excellent range in a Motor.no. test. The 42.2 kWh version covered 325 km, while the 61 kWh version reached 428 km.

Kia claims that the actual range of the Kia EV2 under favorable conditions exceeds the values according to the WLTP procedure, as verified by NAF/Motor.no. The Kia EV2 with a 42.2 (~40) kWh battery covered 325 kilometers, although WLTP states this configuration should only achieve 308 kilometers (105.4 percent). The same was true for the Kia EV2 Long Range model with a 61 (~58) kWh battery, which reached 428 kilometers (103.6 percent), despite the GT-Line version with 19-inch wheels specifying only 413 kilometers.

Kia EV2’s actual range is better than good

The test was conducted in Norway, under very good weather conditions with strict enforcement of speed limits, which is why many cars achieved results similar to or better than those indicated by the WLTP procedure. This applied even to the leader in the rankings, the BMW iX3. Electric vehicle drivers also know that under optimal conditions—temperatures around 12-20 degrees Celsius to avoid heating or cooling the battery, sunlight, and steady driving—the possibility of exceeding WLTP figures is quite real. Nevertheless, the results for the Kia EV2 are pleasing, even triple so.

/Below: specifications of the Kia EV2 and various wheel sizes depending on the version/

Firstly, even the version with a smaller battery can travel more than expected, which is an important factor for those buying an electric vehicle and being careful with every penny. It’s easy to calculate that for the Earth version starting at 99,900 zlotys, we pay 307 zlotys per kilometer of actual range under good conditions. Similar to an electric bike, except in the EV2, it doesn’t drip on us, allowing us to go further and faster on a single charge. The GT-Line version with a larger battery, which participated in the same test, is more expensive at 367 zlotys per kilometer.

Secondly, the model with a large battery, the Kia EV2 GT-Line, lost only 25 percent of its range in subzero temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius, covering 310.6 kilometers. This is an excellent result. Considering the disastrous traffic jam near Ostróda just before New Year’s Eve, when all cars got stuck in a bottleneck due to snowstorms, it’s easy to calculate that such a car charged in Warsaw would still have 31 percent of its battery left. It could thus remain in the cold for 10 hours and then reach any charger ahead of, at, or behind Ostróda without issue (with 6 kWh of “free” energy).

Thirdly: The Kia EV2 performs well even when compared to its competitors. We decided to calculate the cost-effectiveness of purchasing a VW ID. Polo compared to the EV2, since both vehicles compete in the same segment. Unfairly toward Kia, we assumed that the ID. Polo would also achieve the aforementioned 103.6 percent WLTP range in a summer test, as no car based on the MEB+ platform made it into the experiment [it was too early; the cars weren’t yet on sale – edit]. If, according to WLTP standards, the VW ID. Polo achieves 454 units, it would cover an estimated 470 kilometers. This means each kilometer of range would cost 328 zlotys. In the EV2, this was actually 307 zlotys per kilometer. With a similar discount policy, the Kia EV2 offers a better value for money, based on a real-world test.

Editor’s note from Elektrowozu: The Xpeng X9 achieved a result similar to the Kia EV2 in terms of WLTP range versus actual range. While this car might be ideal for Elektrowozu’s editors or others who believe that family is strength, we think Xpeng probably didn’t take a close look at the sales figures of the Kia EV9 or Hyundai Ioniq 9 in Europe when deciding to bring this van to the market there.
