Little Interest in Electric Cars? Supplier Association Presents Surprising Survey
The European parts supplier association CLEPA wanted to use a representative survey in the five largest EU countries to determine the level of interest in electric vehicles. The results are surprising: only 8 percent of respondents intend to buy an electric vehicle in their next car purchase. This makes the study stand out from similar surveys and is completely at odds with developments in the German market.

- [Data](https://www.electrive.net/tag/data/ "Data")
CLEPA cites a representative survey of over 5,200 respondents in Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Spain as the basis for these findings. The key message—that only 8 percent of respondents intend to purchase a battery electric vehicle—“stands in sharp contrast to similar studies from recent times,” according to Automobilwoche, which first reported on this survey.
The industry magazine also provides analysis, identifying survey design as the key factor behind the unusual results: CLEPA surveyed all adults, including those without a driver’s license, their own car, or intention to purchase one. CLEPA Secretary General Benjamin Krieger said in response to a query from Automobilwoche, “A large proportion of new electric vehicle sales comes from commercial fleet registrations.” This does not reflect the actual behavior of end consumers. The survey captures more of a general purchasing intention rather than immediate, short-term demand.
Another possible reason for potential distortion: According to Automobilwoche, participants in the online survey were able to select two preferred types of propulsion for their purchase intentions. In other words, possible combinations such as internal combustion engine and BEV or hybrid drive and internal combustion engine were available as answers.
When comparing current market data from Germany, the CLEPA survey also appears in a different light. According to market researcher Dataforce, the electrification of the passenger car market in August was driven primarily by the private sector. Registrations of battery electric vehicles rose by 141 percent to 36,793 units. As a result, 42.7 percent of all privately registered passenger cars in August were fully electric—this is the second-highest figure ever recorded. Including plug-in hybrids, 51.0 percent of privately registered new vehicles could be charged externally, up from 26.9 percent a year earlier. Meanwhile, gasoline and diesel vehicles lost market share in Germany by 28 percent and 22 percent respectively. Thus, the actual German market reflects a very different picture than the theoretical CLEPA survey.

I’m sorry, but why aren’t you organizing this? Private buyers now far outnumber fleet registrations for electric cars. Even at a 50:50 ratio, it would still be almost double of 8% in terms of new registrations.

The KBA data from Fz 28 allow for further breakdown of commercial registrations by separately identifying vehicle manufacturers, dealers, and rental companies. While these three groups account for only a small portion of BEV registrations, until recently, “self-use” commercial operators even showed a higher proportion of BEVs compared to private individuals.

The last paragraph provides some context, especially regarding recent registration figures and the main driver behind private purchases.

After the “study” by TU Munich, here comes an “survey” from the suppliers’ association. Once again, highly negative views on electric cars. Professionally speaking, it’s simply embarrassing and clearly driven by ideology, so as to launch as many attacks on BEVs as possible before revising the phase-out of internal combustion engines. I would be ashamed to be involved.

Shame can be overridden with plenty of money.

But the money only helps in the short term.

This must be some Söder survey, so he can keep claiming things about non-existent internal combustion engines. This tactic by a “democrat” is all the more shameful as it follows the same pattern as the AFD and “anti-democrats.” It’s alarming, but hopefully clear enough that the majority of the country won’t fall for it. It all seems very familiar to me from employee surveys at my company. There, the answers are also limited to options like: A) Are they satisfied? B) Are they very satisfied? C) Are they especially satisfied? If the answers don’t suit them, they’re simply omitted. That way, you can arrive at the result you want.

Exactly in line with the motto “only trust statistics you’ve fabricated yourself” or “he who measures makes mistakes,” but I really don’t think manufacturers are that limited!

Another confirmation that electric vehicle incentives and CO2 taxes greatly distort true preferences.

As long as not even all possible answer options are fully listed here, the article and the text on the CLEPA page are completely worthless. How many answer options were there? About five? Then please provide the percentages for all 5 answers.
