What amazing tires have given the Tesla Model 3 RWD such great range? Everything we know about the Giti GitiControl P10

Tesla has increased the certified range of the Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive version in its configurator to 572 WLTP units. In a post on X, it stated that this is due to the tires. We already debunked this claim yesterday – it’s not just about the tires but a whole range of upgrades that previously, coincidentally, hardly increased range at all – so let’s take a look at these supposed miracle tires. They are the Giti GitiControl P10 /sometimes spelled as: Giti Control P10/.

The GitiControl P10 is an asymmetric summer tire (manufacturer’s page HERE) produced by the Indonesian company Giti, which also owns brands such as GT Radial and Primewell. The company is best known in the Far East and more broadly in the Asia-Pacific region, which is why the most tire tests can be found in media from that area. In a Malaysian Top Tire Review, the Giti Control P10 outperformed the Continental UltraContact UC7 in wet braking, wet handling, and external noise levels. This resulted in better lap times on the track.

Giti claims that improved water drainage is achieved through the enlarged longitudinal channels along the tire’s perimeter (illustration above) as well as the chromosome-shaped diagonal channels (illustration below). The grooves in the tread itself are also asymmetric, which is designed to enhance safety by improving traction while simultaneously reducing noise generated by the tire — a point partially confirmed by Top Tire Review. Greater contact area between the tire and the road surface also contributes to better traction.

GitiControl P10 is weaker than the Continental tire in terms of rolling resistance, at least according to measurements (8.6 N/kN vs 8.3 N/kN). It also performs worse in dry handling and interior noise (see chart below; Giti = reference point; higher = better; source). This results in a slower lap time on dry tracks and may also affect its battery life being worse compared to the UltraContact UC7, concludes TopTireReview:

Australian site The Drive compared the GitiControl P10 with the Michelin e.Primacy and Bridgestone Turanza T005 (source). On dry roads, the tires performed similarly, but the GitiControl P10 truly shone in terms of low rolling resistance and braking performance on wet roads. However, in dynamic testing, it ranked in the middle of the group. Giti has been supplying GitiControl P10 tires to Tesla Model 3 vehicles produced at the Gigafactory in Shanghai for at least two years (source); the same model is also used in some BYD vehicles (see promotional video) and MG models, not necessarily those that are purely electric.

According to user experiences, these tires indeed perform better on wet roads and help reduce energy consumption, but they are noisier, especially at high speeds, and wear out quite quickly.

Editor’s note from Elektrowozu: keep in mind that tires are similar to 12 V batteries. Those installed by the manufacturer at the factory are a different product from those we buy on the open market.
