How to store an e-bike battery to keep it functional until spring

Store the e-bike battery in a dry place at a partially charged level. Bosch recommends 30–60%, while Shimano suggests around 70%. After winter riding, let it warm up before charging.
Cold reduces range
At low temperatures, lithium-ion batteries deliver less energy, resulting in the e-bike covering a shorter distance. The reduced range in winter does not necessarily mean permanent capacity loss. The battery’s performance can return to normal levels after warming up.
If you ride in winter, take the battery out of the room and install it in the bike just before setting off. Bosch also recommends this approach. Check the operating temperatures in your model’s manual, as they cannot be confused with the charging range.
For example, Shimano allows discharging batteries described in the UM-70F3B manual from −10 to 50 °C and charging from 0 to 40 °C. After coming out of the cold, let the battery warm up naturally to room temperature. A fixed waiting time may not be sufficient to heat the entire battery.
Do not store it full or empty during winter
There is no one-size-fits-all percentage for long-term storage across all brands. Bosch recommends charging to 30–60 %, while Shimano suggests around 70 % for its batteries. Therefore, follow the specific battery’s manual before entering winter storage.
Remove the removable battery from the bike and store it in a dry room with stable temperatures, away from sunlight and heat sources. Shimano recommends around 10–20 °C. It is better to have a dry place where the temperature does not fluctuate significantly and does not drop below the manufacturer’s recommended levels.
During winter, check the charge level regularly and top it up according to the instructions. Shimano recommends charging it every six months to prevent the battery from becoming completely empty. There is no need to discharge it to zero regularly to “exercise” the lithium-ion battery.
Dry the contacts before charging
Use the charger specified by the manufacturer for that battery. Charge it in a dry place, away from flammable objects, and under supervision. After bringing it back from cold weather, do not place it on a radiator or heat it with hot air. The contacts must be dry before connecting.
Before storing, clean the bike of mud and road salt. Do not use a pressure washer or direct water flow on the battery; a damp cloth is sufficient. Clean and dry its holder as well. Choose contact treatment products according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check the battery casing, connectors, and charger cable as well. Cracks, deformations, or damaged cables require professional repair. If you find such damage, do not charge the battery or put it back into use before having it inspected by a specialist.
