Jaecoo 5 EV: Electric compact SUV with a range of 402 km and many features, starting at 32,400 euros

The Jaecoo 5 EV is the first all-electric vehicle from the Chery-owned brand. Although this compact SUV has a WLTP range of only 402 km and does not charge very quickly, it is available starting at 32,400 euros and comes equipped with many features.
The brand name Jaecoo is derived from “Jae” (the beginning of the word “Jäger”) and “cool.” The manufacturer aims to convey off-road capability and coolness, qualities that also make the cars suitable for city driving. Nevertheless, the brand name is pronounced in English, similar to “Jyekoo.” The name of the partner brand, Omoda, comes from O for Oxygen and “modern,” intended to express freshness and modernity. The Omoda 5 EV is technically identical to the Jaecoo but is slightly longer and lower, targeting a different customer base.

Exterior
At 4.38 meters long, the Jaecoo 5 EV is roughly the same length as the Hyundai Kona Elektro, but it is 7 centimeters taller. However, Jaecoo classifies this vehicle in the B-segment, meaning it belongs to the compact car category. Its turning radius of 10.9 meters is similar to that of the VW Golf (10.9 to 11.1 meters).

The design is quite angular and characterized by smooth surfaces; it vaguely resembles Land Rover. The door handles are in the form of arms, and there are narrow lights at the front mounted in a black crossbar with the Jaecoo logo appearing in the center. Unlike the parallel full-hybrid version, this vehicle lacks a grille. Cooling air enters through a lower air intake with active flaps. At the rear, slim taillights continue the front’s design aesthetic. The car comes standard with 18-inch aluminum wheels. Four colors are available: white, gray, black, and blue.
Interior
Jaecoo promises a spacious interior with numerous storage areas. The cockpit features a vertically mounted 13.2-inch touchscreen and an 8.9-inch instrument display. The exterior mirrors can be adjusted using physical controls.

The trunk offers a volume of 384 to 1,284 liters. This is slightly less than that of the Kona Electric, which can hold 466 to 1,300 liters. Although the Jaecoo 5 EV is a front-wheel-drive vehicle, it also provides an additional 35 liters of storage space in the front trunk.

Powertrain and Battery
The Jaecoo 5 EV features front-wheel drive with 155 kW of power. It offers three driving modes: Eco provides maximum efficiency and range, Normal is the default setting, and Sport delivers a more dynamic driving experience. The electric motor is integrated into a compact 7-in-1 unit along with the transmission, DC/DC converter, onboard charger, thermal management system, motor controller, and power distribution unit.

The LFP battery has a storage capacity of 61 kWh, which according to the EV-Database corresponds to the gross value — the net value is 59 kWh. It can be charged either with 11 kW AC or up to 130 kW DC. This allows the battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 34 minutes.

Based on the given data, the average charging speed is calculated as 59 kWh × 0.7 / 34 minutes = 1.2 kWh per minute. Multiplying this value by 60 minutes per hour yields an average charging capacity in the range of 10 to 80 percent. Similarly, using the WLTP range and charging time, the refueling value can be determined: the Jaecoo charges enough electricity per minute to cover approximately eight kilometers. All these values are not particularly good, but acceptable for an electric car with a short range that is likely used rarely for long distances.
Prices and Features
The Jaecoo 5 EV is available in the Select and Exclusive trims. Prices start at 32,400 euros, making it significantly cheaper than the Hyundai Kona Elektro, which begins at 38,340 euros. In this version, the Hyundai also offers only 99 kW of power and a WLTP range of 380 km, with far inferior equipment as well.

The standard equipment on the Select includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, LED lighting, rain sensor, electrically adjustable, heated, and foldable exterior mirrors, keyless entry with walk-away automatic locking, an electrically operated trunk lid, two-layer acoustic glass in the front, seat and steering wheel heating, a two-zone automatic climate control, three USB ports, a navigation system, a particulate filter, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as voice control.
Front and rear park sensors, a 360-degree view system, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and blind spot warning are also standard. Additionally, the trunk features a removable light that provides extra illumination for outdoor and camping activities.
The Exclusive version includes tinted windows, a roof rail, electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, a 1.45 m² glass roof with an electric sunshade, and a Sony sound system with eight speakers. The synthetic leather seats are said to be particularly durable and scratch-resistant. They are also easy to clean, making the interior especially suitable for families with dogs. Incidentally, the car also features a pet mode that maintains a constant interior temperature and alerts concerned passersby via an indicator on the central display that the air conditioning is active.
There is also a camping mode that keeps the interior climate-controlled and allows powering external devices via the V2L function. An adapter enables supplying external devices with up to 3.3 kW of power—enough for a kettle, a small refrigerator, a laptop, or an e-bike.
Through a smartphone app, users can schedule and monitor charging, check the current charge level and remaining range, and view the locations of charging stations—including plug types and available spots. It also allows activating the air conditioning, locking and unlocking the doors, and retrieving the vehicle’s current location.
Jaecoo offers a seven-year or 150,000 km warranty on the vehicle. The warranty for the drive system and battery is eight years or up to 160,000 km. European roadside assistance is included for the first three years or up to 80,000 km from the date of first registration. Starting in the first quarter of 2027, the model will no longer be produced in China but at Chery’s new factory in Barcelona, which likely helps avoid EU tariffs as well.
More new electric cars from China:
Bottom line
The Jaecoo 5 EV is another electric SUV from China following a familiar pattern. It offers plenty of features at a relatively low price, but it has limited range and only mediocre charging performance. On the positive side, its design is significantly different (more angular) compared to many Chinese models, such as those from BYD. Additionally, the exterior mirrors can be adjusted using physical controls. Ultimately, the Jaecoo stands out mainly due to its price. Compared to the equivalent Hyundai Kona, it is much cheaper yet comes with better equipment.
