InstaVolt to retain CHAdeMO charging across network

InstaVolt to retain CHAdeMO charging across network

While many carmakers and other charging networks are increasingly turning away from CHAdeMO connectors, InstaVolt is holding fast. The UK fast-charging network has reaffirmed its commitment to retaining CHAdeMO connectors as a permanent feature of its network.

In recent years, CHAdeMO has become increasingly uncommon on new EVs in Europe, as manufacturers switch to the CCS standard instead. Even Nissan, one of the key players in establishing the Japanese charging standard in Europe, has begun to drop CHAdeMO; for example, the new Leaf now uses CCS, with its second-generation predecessor being the last Nissan model sold in Europe to retain CHAdeMo ports. In response, some charge point operators have also begun removing the connector from their sites. In 2023, Allego announced it would no longer install new CHAdeMO chargers, although existing units would remain in service until they need replacement.

In this context, InstaVolt’s announcement then come as somewhat of a surprise. The CPO has confirmed that it CHAdeMO will be a ‘permanent feature’ across its UK network, and will retain at least one connector available at each of its sites – arguing that “thousands” of drivers still rely on the Japanese connector standard.

The timing of this commitment deliberately coincides with ‘Used EV Week’; the Nissan Leaf, after all, remains one of the most popular models within the UK’s used electric vehicle market. Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, said in a statement: “Every InstaVolt site, existing and new, has CHAdeMO alongside CCS. That’s not a legacy afterthought; it’s a deliberate choice to back the used EV market. A car doesn’t stop being viable the day the manufacturer moves on to a new connector.”

This follows a similar pledge made by InstaVolt in July to UK drivers: “If you drive a CHAdeMO compatible EV, you can continue to rely on InstaVolt whenever you need to charge.” In a press release, the firm also said: “Electric vehicle ownership doesn’t change overnight. Many drivers keep their EVs for years, meaning thousands of CHAdeMO compatible vehicles are still used every day for commuting, business travel and longer journeys across the UK. While manufacturers have largely moved towards CCS for new models, maintaining access to CHAdeMO charging remains an important part of supporting today’s EV drivers, not just tomorrow’s”.
