"I finally tried Tesla vehicles. Specifically the Model Y Standard and Model 3 Performance (I wanted to try the M3 LR RWD but it wasn’t available for testing). Advantages: practically everything. Disadvantages: the driver assistance features. I have a Megane and can choose to activate only Cruise Control or also lane-keeping, which I find extremely useful. Tesla, on the other hand, always includes both together, and if it doesn’t detect lane markings, it disengages and brakes! If you move the steering wheel, it disengages and brakes. If you signal and turn the wheel yourself to overtake, guess what it does? It disengages and brakes. By braking, I mean it’s as if you took your foot off the accelerator, and the one-pedal mode causes it to slow down until it stops. For overtaking, Tesla takes too long before performing it autonomously. It drives through a section of two-lane road that starts to narrow, and Tesla wants to move to the center of the lane. Average Italians don’t follow the speed limits and overtake you at that moment. You have to touch the steering wheel, so you lose adaptive driving assistance and have to brake!“Am I the only one who finds this so dramatic?”
To cover a total distance of 35 km with the two cars, I had to press the autonomous driving button 30 times! The central paddle, on the other hand, is convenient; it takes about a week to master everything, but it’s doable. I was very skeptical at first, but I changed my mind. I focus only on this aspect of autonomous driving (especially since everything else is excellent). There are plenty of videos and explanations about the other features, but this aspect was never mentioned anywhere. For further context, my employer owns a 2018 Model S. He confirms that he uses the autonomous driving feature very little too, precisely because it’s too intrusive. Sometimes it even brakes suddenly for no reason (which is very dangerous, as he’s experienced it firsthand). It’s a shame he only shared this with me now… Am I the only one who finds it so problematic? What do you think?
Response. We had never received such harsh criticism of Tesla’s autonomous driving system. We would like those who drive these cars every day, for years, to respond to Mauro. And perhaps explain to him if there is anything that wasn’t explained to him.
