Hyundai to supply 15 electric buses to Marrakech

Hyundai Motor is set to supply 15 Elec City buses to Marrakech, Morocco, as part of a development aid project with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). KOICA will provide the buses, fast chargers and related equipment, as well as local training and technical support for their operation and maintenance.
According to a report by Seoul Economic Daily, the project is part of a development assistance programme KOICA is pursuing with the Moroccan government which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050. To this end, the Elec City buses will be first South Korean-produced electric buses to be supplied to Morocco, where they will operate on bus routes in the city’s main tourist districts.
At a handover ceremony at Hyundai’s Jeonju plant in Jeonbuk State, South Korea, the company said it plans to use the partnership as a way to explore opportunities for commercial electromobility in different operating conditions and markets, including elsewhere in North Africa.
Park Chul-yeon, head of Hyundai Motor’s Global Commercial Vehicle & LCV Division, said: “This project will be a meaningful case that broadens the potential for electrifying public transport using electric buses. We will provide eco-friendly commercial mobility suited to operating conditions in various regions and work with partner institutions to help build a sustainable transport environment.”
Chafik Rachadi, the Moroccan ambassador to South Korea, added: “We expect this project not only to contribute to Morocco’s carbon neutrality goal and to better transport convenience for residents, but also to become a new starting point for cooperation between Korea and Morocco on sustainable urban mobility.”
It marks a wider effort by Hyundai to expand its electric bus business overseas. In 2025, the company delivered Japan’s first electric buses – namely five Elec City Town buses. These were then deployed on public routes on Yakushima Island.
