Hyundai Kona Electric now qualifies for full UK Electric Car Grant

The Hyundai Kona Electric has been upgraded to the highest band of the UK's Electric Car Grant, making it eligible for the full £3,750 incentive. The decision follows a review of the model's environmental supply chain credentials.

Hyundai Motor UK has announced that the Kona Electric now qualifies for the full £3,750 incentive under the UK’s Electric Car Grant (ECG). The model had previously been eligible for the lower Band 2 grant of £1,500, meaning customers will now receive an additional £2,250 discount from the date of the announcement.

According to Hyundai, the upgrade follows a successful review of the environmental credentials of the Kona Electric’s supply chain and manufacturing process. Introduced in July, the ECG is part of the government’s broader £650 million programme to encourage electric vehicle uptake and support the transition away from fossil fuels. As we explained in detail in this previous article, price is not the only criterion. At the core of the new Electric Car Grant is the requirement that manufacturers demonstrate verifiable commitments to decarbonisation. The battery production location, as well as the vehicles assembly location also play an important role.

“The Kona Electric has always offered one of the most compelling combinations of range, practicality and value in its class, and now it’s greater value than ever. The £3,750 grant is a meaningful contribution towards the cost of going electric, and the first step to welcoming more models from our line-up into the scheme as the year progresses,” said Ashley Andrew, President of Hyundai Motor UK.

The second-generation Kona Electric is offered with either a 48.4 kWh battery and 156 PS or a 65.4 kWh battery producing 160 kW. The long-range version offers a WLTP driving range of up to 319 miles (513 kilometres). Hyundai says prices now start at £31,250 after application of the Electric Car Grant, compared with a list price of £35,000.
