Honda reportedly taps Tata Technologies for multi-energy platform

Honda has reportedly commissioned Tata Technologies to develop a new vehicle platform. The future platform will support multiple powertrains, giving the Japanese automaker the flexibility to adapt to changing market dynamics.

According to Bloomberg, Tata Technologies, based in Pune, Maharashtra, will develop a platform for multiple vehicle models. The latter also reports that the architecture is designed to accommodate ICE, hybrid and all-electric powertrains. Neither company has so far confirmed the report, and Tata speaks of ‘a full vehicle development program with a leading Japanese automotive OEM,’ without specifically naming Honda at this point.

While people familiar with the matter did not specify the target markets for the models based on the Tata Technologies-engineered platform, India could be a likely candidate. Just last October, Honda named India its third-highest global priority for future growth, after North America and Japan, and announced plans to launch ten models in the country by 2030.

As mentioned above, neither Honda nor Tata Technologies has confirmed the reported partnership on a new car platform. However, recent statements from both companies are consistent with the possibility of such a collaboration. During Tata Technologies’ Q4 FY2026 earnings conference call on 4 May 2026, CEO and MD Warren Harris announced that the company had secured a deal for a full vehicle programme from a Japanese automotive OEM in April.

On 17 July 2026, during Tata Technologies’ Q1 FY2027 earnings conference call, Harris touched upon the deal again, saying: “Japanese OEMs have historically been highly selective in their choice of engineering partners, particularly for programs of this strategic importance. To be entrusted with the complete development of a vehicle program by a customer with whom we had no prior relationship in this space is a remarkable achievement.”

As for Honda, at a press briefing on 14 May 2026, President and CEO Toshihiro Mibe said: “We will proactively utilise local development resources, including external resources, and introduce new models as quickly as possible.” Mibe was discussing strategic models tailored to the Indian market that Honda plans to launch from 2028 onwards, and his reference to external resources may have included Tata Technologies.

At least one of these India-focused products is likely to be a small SUV measuring no more than 4 m in length, offered with ICE, hybrid and electric powertrains.

Honda india focused model plan

Honda entered India in 1998 and earned a reputation for its premium cars, but has struggled to become a significant player owing to limited success with more affordable models. The company manufactures only three models in India, two of which are ICE/hybrid models measuring over 4 m in length and thus attracting the highest tax rate of 40 per cent. Its market share has declined from seven per cent a decade ago to less than two per cent.

Honda plans to launch the 0 Alpha in India in 2027 as its first electric model in the country. Development of the model appears to be well advanced, so Tata Technologies is unlikely to have had significant involvement, if any, in the project.
