Honda ALPHA: The only survivor of Honda’s canceled electric vehicle line now has a release date

Due to low sales of electric cars in the U.S. market, Honda decided to cancel two of its most significant projects in recent times this year: the AFEELA brand, a joint venture with Sony to develop technologically advanced electric cars; and the 0 Series, a family of electric models whose first member, a radical sedan with a wedge-shaped profile, was already nearly complete.

To make matters worse, Honda also decided to suspend the development of a new electric car for Acura, its premium brand. However, one model has survived this cutback: the Honda ALPHA, an SUV that was originally intended to be part of the 0 Series family but will ultimately become a standalone vehicle within the Japanese manufacturer’s lineup.

The international debut of the new model will take place on December 2nd. From the only preview shared by the brand, it can be seen that its design will be very similar to that of the Honda 0 α prototype, which was unveiled last year at the Tokyo Mobility Show. All indications suggest it will arrive in Europe as a replacement for the Honda e:Ny1.

At the time, Honda announced that this model would combine a relatively low body with a high ground clearance, ensuring good aerodynamics without sacrificing the versatility expected of an SUV. One of the most distinctive features of its body design is its extremely wide C-pillar.

The rear end is particularly striking due to its vertical design. The rear lights are framed by U-shaped guides, while at the front we find a black cover that houses the optical units, the illuminated company logo, and the charging port.

Originally, the ALPHA was intended to be positioned one tier below the larger Honda 0 Saloon and 0 SUV models. Its compact size likely saved it from cancellation, as its smaller dimensions allow it to find a market in international regions, whereas its larger siblings were primarily targeted at the United States.

Honda ALPHA

"The Honda 0 α is being developed as an SUV that will fit seamlessly into both urban and natural environments, making life easier for people in any situation. [...] The Honda 0 α will join the lineup as an entry-level model in Honda’s 0 Series, featuring a refined design and a spacious interior that offers exceptional comfort for passengers."
