Up to 200 kilometers without using a single drop of gasoline: Volvo updates its two best plug-in hybrids
For years, plug-in hybrids have carried an somewhat unfair reputation: that of being half-baked electric cars with such short ranges that they were barely good enough for the commute to work. Volvo aims to shed this label with the launch of its first long-range plug-in hybrids, unveiled today for European and American markets on two of its most important models: the XC60 and the XC90.
This is no ordinary release in the Swedish brand’s lineup. The XC60 is, according to Volvo itself, its best-selling model in history, while the XC90 was the car that launched its entry into the premium SUV segment. The fact that both models now receive this mechanical upgrade underscores just how much the brand relies on them as a bridge toward full electrification.
Larger battery and more powerful electric motor
The key to this leap lies in the mechanics of the plug-in hybrid system. Both models feature a new, higher-capacity battery integrated into the vehicle’s floor, along with a more powerful electric motor, while the gasoline engine remains available to take over when needed. Thanks to this combination, the electric range of both SUVs doubles compared to their previous plug-in versions: up to 200 kilometers for the XC60, and up to 160 kilometers for the larger XC90. Both models are also available in a mild hybrid version for those who prefer it, in addition to the attractive all-electric options: the Volvo EX60 and the Volvo EX90.
The XC60 also gets a refreshed design
In addition to the mechanical suspension upgrade, the new XC60 features exterior design updates to the front and rear, including a refreshed grille, a new front bumper, a redesigned hood and front fenders, as well as new tires. The Matrix LED headlights, known as “Thor’s hammer,” have also been redesigned to deliver the brand’s signature lighting in its most refined form. Inside, the car introduces a new design for the dashboard and door panels, with wood trim and ventilated Nappa leather upholstery in Cardamom tone.
More sensors and driving assistants for the XC60
The new XC60 also features Volvo’s latest generation of active safety technology. This system can detect a potential collision and respond in real time, whether by alerting the driver, assisting in avoiding danger through automatic emergency steering, braking automatically, or warning of a cyclist’s presence before opening a door. All of this is powered by an upgraded suite of sensors, including radars, cameras, and other systems, which also enable features such as lane change assist or a 360-degree camera with 3D views.
The XC90, true to its family space focus
The XC90, on the other hand, continues to serve as a seven-seater family SUV focused on comfort and safety, featuring high-quality materials, natural light entry, and wooden trim. Optionally, the vehicle can be equipped with a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Both the XC60 and XC90 come standard with Google Gemini’s artificial intelligence assistant, integrated into the XC60’s 11.2-inch Volvo Car UX infotainment system.
Production starting this fall
Both models, including the Black Edition variant, are now available for reservation starting today, with production set to begin this fall. Like the rest of Volvo’s current lineup, both the XC60 and XC90 will receive regular over-the-air updates (OTA), allowing the vehicles to continue improving over time after purchase. It should be noted that the range figures are preliminary, obtained under the WLTP certification cycle under specific test conditions, and the actual results may vary depending on battery charge level, vehicle specifications, outside and battery temperatures, weather conditions, terrain, driving style, and speed.
