Hamburger Hochbahn: Trial operations begin at electric bus depot

Hochbahn has launched trial operations at its first all-electric bus depot in Hamburg. Here’s what makes the new hall in Meiendorf so special - and when you can expect around 130 emission-free buses to begin rolling through the district.
Yesterday, Hamburger Hochbahn AG launched trial operations at its first depot designed exclusively for battery-electric buses at the Meiendorf site. Although its initial fleet 30 buses will not enter regular service until 13 December 2026, around 20 employees are already conducting real-world route trials with up to ten vehicles. During this test phase, which aims to refine operational processes and train staff, passengers in north-eastern Hamburg – including in Rahlstedt, Farmsen, Volksdorf and Berne – will gradually benefit from the service.
For the e-mobility industry, the project provides valuable insights and real-world data from the operation of a large-scale charging infrastructure and a growing electric fleet in continuous use. The offering is ultimately set to expand to 130 battery-electric buses at the Meiendorf location. The depot’s convenient location, directly within the service area, significantly shortens travel distances, reducing unproductive empty trips and optimising the fleet’s daily energy requirements.
In addition, the electric depot prioritises responsible resource and energy management: the roofs of the facility are green and equipped with PV systems. Furthermore, Hamburger Hochbahn uses the waste heat from the charging technology to heat the operational buildings. Collected rainwater is also used for vehicle cleaning.
