Hamburg is assigning the bus service until 2036 to vhh.mobility

Hamburg has once again awarded the bus service contract for ten years to vhh.mobility. The contract runs until the end of 2036, providing stability for further development of electric mobility and the modernization of bus depots.

Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein (vhh.mobility) will continue to handle a large portion of Hamburg’s bus services in the future. According to the company, the city has completed the direct awarding of public transportation services. The new contract begins on December 13, 2026, and lasts for ten years until the end of 2036.

Vhh.mobility operates more than 70 bus routes commissioned by Hamburg, spanning from the outer districts to the city center. These include four XpressBus and eight MetroBus lines, along with numerous city and night bus services. In Hamburg alone, these vehicles travel approximately 25 million kilometers per year, and nearly double that distance across the entire Hamburg Transport Association (hvv) area.

By recommitting to this service, Hamburg aims to ensure the long-term development of its bus network. Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks described vhh.mobility as a key partner for an efficient public transportation system, especially for connecting the outer districts and surrounding areas.

For vhh.mobility, a ten-year contract duration is particularly important in light of the electrification of its bus fleet. The company plans further modernizations of its facilities to adapt the infrastructure to an increasingly electric bus operation. Managing director Lorenz Kasch sees this as a crucial foundation for further developing electric mobility.

VHH.mobility drives the electrification of the bus fleet

The extent to which electrification has already progressed is evident in the Segeberg district. There, vhh.mobility introduced ten additional electric buses from MAN in September, doubling the local electric bus fleet to 20 vehicles. Around half of the transportation services provided there are now powered electrically. This expansion was made possible by the expansion of the depot in Norderstedt, which now has over 49 charging points.

Meanwhile, according to reports from the online portal Busplaner, further negotiations are underway regarding transportation services in the surrounding areas of Hamburg. New contracts are up for bidding in Südstormarn and the Segeberg district, and vhh.mobility is also in talks with the Pinneberg district. As early as 2025, the company secured contracts in the Stormarn and Herzogtum Lauenburg districts with durations of 15 and 10 years respectively.
