The expansion of brands from China in the European automotive market shows no signs of slowing down. A new addition to the Old Continent is the launch of GWM ORA 5 (Great Wall Motor), represented by its official distributor Astana Motors Poland. The choice of the C-SUV segment is not arbitrary. Today, it is precisely compact crossovers that account for over half of total new car sales in Europe and Poland.

Among other reasons, the designers opted for organic shapes rather than sharp, aggressive cuts. The styling approach known as “Full-Surface Fluid Sculpture” draws heavily from nature, from lines resembling moving clouds to a rear end that mimics flowing water. The distinctive droplet-shaped LED headlights give the car a unique appearance, which has already been recognized with an industry award, the London Design Award, according to the manufacturer. It seems the designers were greatly inspired by a well-known German sports car brand, as the resemblance to a certain model is striking – note from editor.

Two engines for starting, electric as an option

What sets the ORA 5 apart from its competitors is its powertrain options available under one roof with a length of 4.47 meters. Customers aren’t forced to switch to electric power — they get a choice tailored to their needs, according to the brand’s marketers.

The lineup begins with the classic gasoline version, a 1.5 turbo engine producing 160 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission 7DCT. This combination allows the car to reach 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds, with an average fuel consumption of 6.9 l/100 km in the WLTP cycle.

For those seeking performance and efficiency, the Full Hybrid Hi2 version is available. This system combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and a two-speed DHT transmission to deliver a total power of 223 horsepower and a torque of up to 476 Nm. The result? Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 7.7 seconds, while the average fuel consumption drops to 5.1 l/100 km. This enables the vehicle to travel over 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of fuel. In the next phase, a fully electric variant will be added to the lineup, with an urban range exceeding 600 km according to WLTP standards, GWM says.

GWM ORA 5 Tailored for European Roads

Many Asian models are criticized for having overly soft suspensions that aren’t suited to European driving habits, but it’s said that this issue was addressed in the ORA 5. Its suspension system—featuring MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear—was tuned for European roads by engineers from Racing Syn. The use of thicker stabilizers along with Bosch’s electric power steering is intended to ensure proper handling precision.

The interior is designed with digital comfort in mind. The cabin features a large 14.6-inch touchscreen operating the proprietary Coffee OS, supplemented by 10.25-inch digital displays. The system offers wireless integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Over-The-Air updates. It also emphasizes eco-friendliness and air quality—materials used in the cabin are odorless and antibacterial, while the seats are covered with breathable 3D mesh and recycled synthetic leather.

The safety is ensured by the third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra platform, which integrates up to 23 driver assistance features, including a 540° camera with a “transparent chassis” function. The vehicle’s structure is based on a frame made up of 75.3% high-strength steel.

Aggressive price and strong warranties

The new model enters the Polish market in two well-equipped versions: Signature and Infinity. Even the base version comes with comprehensive safety and multimedia features. The Infinity version adds items such as ventilated memory seats, a panoramic glass roof, a 9-speaker audio system, and a 50 W wireless charger.

GWM ORA 5 is launching in Poland with a price starting at 109,900 PLN as part of a special promotional offer. A 7-year warranty on the entire vehicle (up to 150,000 km) and an 8-year warranty on the traction battery (up to 160,000 km) are intended to ensure hassle-free operation. Astana Motors Poland is responsible for distribution and the establishment of showrooms and service centers.
