Government announces up to 80% subsidies for purchasing an electric car

The subsidies announced by Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho could cover more than 20,000 electric cars.

The government has introduced a new incentive program for purchasing electric vehicles aimed at the most disadvantaged families. The subsidies could amount to 80% of the purchase price and cover over 20,000 vehicles.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, October 28, by Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho during the parliamentary debate on the proposed state budget for 2027.

The measure aims to make electric mobility more accessible to low-income families, who currently face greater difficulties in acquiring an electric car.

General incentives will also continue

In addition to this new program, the Government confirmed its intention to maintain incentives for purchasing electric vehicles for the general public.

According to Maria da Graça Carvalho, these incentives will follow rules similar to those of previous programs, but will be funded with 50 million euros.

This represents a significant increase from the 10 million euros allocated in the 2026 program, whose funds for private individuals to buy electric cars were quickly exhausted.

So far, the eligibility criteria for the new 80% subsidy, the price limits for the vehicles covered, or the application deadline have not been announced.

It is also unclear whether the program will allow the purchase of used electric cars and whether it will be mandatory to surrender an old vehicle for scrapping. The final terms should become known with the regulation of the new incentives.

Subsidies for microenterprises

The measures announced by the government are not limited to individuals. Maria da Graça Carvalho revealed that incentives are planned for the purchase of up to 9,000 electric vehicles for microenterprises, aimed at supporting the electrification of their fleets.

In addition, the minister also highlighted a new initiative to support the acquisition of more sustainable heavy vehicles, as well as the development of their respective charging network.

Another measure involves co-financing the purchase of 700 electric buses for areas with low population density.
