GM will switch to native NACS charging ports by the 2027 model year.

Starting with the 2027 model year, GM will adopt the NACS charging standard developed by Tesla for all electric vehicles under its Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands. Thus, beginning with the new model year, all GM models will be able to charge at NACS charging stations without adapters.

We still remember well how, in 2023, one major U.S. manufacturer after another announced its intention to adopt Tesla’s charging plug as the new NACS (“North American Charging Standard”) charging standard. During the transition period, automakers relied heavily on adapters. GM was no exception: since September 2024, GM customers have had access to Tesla’s Supercharger network through adapters.

There is one exception: the Cadillac Optiq is the only GM model that already comes equipped with a directly integrated NACS charging port. All other models do not yet have this feature. However, GM has announced that starting with the upcoming 2027 model year, additional electric vehicles will also be equipped with NACS plugs. This includes the new Chevy Bolt, which is set to return as a 2027 model vehicle this year.

It is also clear that since there are still charging stations with only CCS ports available in the U.S., vehicles with native NACS ports will sometimes need a CCS adapter in the future.
