Geely announces ultra-fast 2.2 MW charging powered by AI: 4 minutes to 70 (80?) percent, with 3,500 battery cycle life.

On Wednesday, September 23, Geely Auto Group plans to unveil several of its latest technologies. Among them, the most interesting will be the demonstration of ultra-fast charging, which is said to be superior to that of BYD. The Chinese company claims that by using artificial intelligence, it can charge batteries from 10% to 70% in just 4 minutes while still controlling capacity loss, ensuring the batteries experience “limited degradation” after 3,500 charge cycles.

3,500 charge cycles, even with a range of 300 kilometers per battery charge, equates to over 1 million (!) kilometers of driving distance.

Geely Auto Group, Golden Battery with AI Charging and… the Completely New Geely E5

The New Geely E5 (2027)

What is known about the new battery is only that it is built using LFP cells. Based on the technology used and the charging capacities, we expect it to achieve a range of around 80-90 kWh even in larger vehicles (segment D or E). The artificial intelligence mentioned earlier is intended to handle the algorithm that monitors temperature rise during charging, allowing maximum power output with minimal degradation. What engineers used to do manually when designing BMS systems is now generated by AI, likely based on hundreds of millions of charging sessions.

The question that remains unanswered is how this artificial intelligence will respond to the gradual wear and tear of the cells—whether it will suddenly start limiting power by 1/5… 1/4… 1/2?

That’s not all—beyond BYD’s Megafast chargers that deliver up to 1.5 MW, Geely is announcing devices capable of reaching 2.2 MW per GB/T DC port. Such power levels can charge not only passenger cars but even trucks—two of them simultaneously! In Europe, an MCS connector would be required, as the maximum CCS2 power supported, even with liquid cooling, is 1,000 kW in short-term mode and 800 kW, or 0.8 MW, in continuous mode.

New Geely E5 (2027)

On the day the new charging technology is unveiled, Geely will also introduce an updated Geely Galaxy E5, known in Europe as the Geely EX5 (previously) and Geely E5 (currently). The vehicle will use an 800 V architecture, charge at 6 C, and come equipped with a 70 kWh battery (currently: 60.2 kWh), enabling up to 521 WLTP miles per charge. The engine will deliver 245 kW/333 HP instead of 160 kW/217 HP, which given the brand’s current customer base (based on our observations: mainly taxi drivers) might be overkill.

We expect the new Geely E5 in Europe by the end of this year or early 2027 at the earliest.

Editor’s note from Elektrowozu: We thought to ourselves that the charging power provided by Geely’s chargers would be sufficient even for an electric locomotive.
