Like other conventional sedans, the SUV segment is undergoing unprecedented technical transformation thanks to electrification. Geely Group has officially unveiled its new suite of capabilities for extreme off-road driving, a remarkable engineering feat that will make its commercial debut in the Geely Zhanjian 700, also known as the Galaxy Cruiser 700 in various markets. Geely is already officially present in Europe through its own brand, offering models such as the Geely E5 and the Geely Starray EM-i.

The Zhanjian 700 represents a break from traditional traction concepts by combining a hybrid chassis structure with a four-motor powertrain and ultra-fast locking mechanical systems. This suite of technologies includes Geely’s GTA (Geely Terrain Architecture) vehicle platform, the Thor EM-T propulsion system, and an AI-powered digital off-road chassis. Development is still ongoing at this time, with no release or market launch date yet.

A hybrid structure that reduces weight and increases stiffness

Geely Zhanjian 700 Structure

The foundation of the Zhanjian 700 and later models is based on the GTA architecture, a design that combines monocoque construction with an integrated frame consisting of six horizontal members, seven vertical members, and eight structural rings. This approach reduces weight by 100 kilograms compared to conventional beam-and-truss chassis, while achieving a torsional stiffness of over 40,000 Nm per degree.

The utilization of the vertical space in the chassis allows for a completely flat floor and an occupiable height of 80.3%, which is higher than any other model. In terms of dimensions, the Zhanjian 700 features a clear floor height of 233 millimeters, which increases to 313 millimeters beneath the battery pack, along with a roof load capacity of up to 16 tons.

Beneath its body dimensions of 5,085 millimeters in length, 1,999 mm in width, 1,912 mm in height, and 2,900 mm in wheelbase lies the Thor EM-T plug-in hybrid propulsion system. The setup combines a 2.0 turbo gasoline engine designed for off-road use, a three-speed DHT transmission, a P3 electric motor on the front axle, and two P4 motors on the rear axle, delivering a combined power output of 830 kW, equivalent to 1,128 horsepower.

To ensure maximum traction on all types of terrain, especially on the most slippery surfaces, Geely employs two electronic locks and one mechanical lock on the rear axle. While the electronics adjust torque instantly, the mechanical lock completes its engagement in just 200 milliseconds. Additionally, the housing of the electrical assembly is made from magnesium alloy and features an active dual-cooling circuit to prevent overheating under prolonged stress.

Active hydraulic suspension and floatability

The active hydraulic suspension can scan the terrain up to 30 meters ahead of the vehicle to adjust damping proactively, enabling maneuvering in tight spaces with a turning diameter of 3.36 meters. The chassis also features stability control systems designed to handle tire blowouts at speeds of up to 140 km/h. Protection for critical components is enhanced by the Aegis battery, which includes an impact-resistant polyurethane bottom shield and a ultra-high-strength steel cage. The entire powertrain boasts IPX8 waterproofing, allowing for an emergency floating mode assisted by sonar and a rear thruster for navigating through deep water.
