Geely Golden Battery + AI: 10% to 70% in 4:30 minutes, 10% to 97% in 8:40 minutes. The new Geely E5 (EX5) will come equipped with this battery.

We just saw the presentation of Geely Golden Battery, featuring charging algorithms optimized with artificial intelligence [because these days everything has to be “AI” – editor’s note]. The manufacturer claimed that with its ultra-fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10 to

80

70 percent in 4 minutes and 30 seconds, while reaching full charge [actually 97 percent to leave room for regenerative braking] takes 8 minutes and 40 seconds. The new Golden Battery will be installed in the updated Geely E5 model.

Geely Auto Group revealed that it began leveraging artificial intelligence in vehicle development as early as 2022, becoming the world’s first manufacturer to do so. Optimizing charging processes and, more broadly, the use of electric vehicles within power grid systems was developed under a separate project named PowerMind. The manufacturer also disclosed that it complies with China’s MIIT guidelines, ensuring that cell temperatures never exceed 65 degrees Celsius during charging. In BYD vehicles, cell casing temperatures can significantly surpass 70 degrees Celsius, while degradation accelerates threefold when temperatures exceed 65 degrees:

That’s not all: 65 degrees Celsius is the maximum. Artificial intelligence has optimized the charging algorithms so that in most cases the actual average temperature doesn’t exceed 55 degrees Celsius. Everything is cooled by fluid: the energy storage unit, charger, charging cable, charging port, and of course the battery itself. The efficiency of such a system is said to be 30 percent higher than that of traditional solutions. The Lynk & Co 10, which served as a test vehicle, reached 1.093 MW (1,093 kW) at its peak. For 57 percent of the time, its battery pack remained below 55 degrees Celsius, with the highest recorded temperature being 64 degrees Celsius.

Efficient cooling made it possible to develop chargers capable of delivering up to 2.2 MW of power. The tested Lynk & Co 10, with 96 percent battery charge, still received over 270 kW of power from the charger. Its battery is built using shorter blade cells, rectangular in shape and less than 40 centimeters long. Since these cells are even shorter than previous versions (58 cm), they have lower internal resistance (-31 percent), meaning less heat generation (-10 percent in losses), allowing for higher charging speeds.

To slow down the degradation of new batteries, AI algorithms are naturally used, which now employ pulse charging (ultra-short charges/discharges at high power levels to extract lithium ions). The new cells will be used in three Geely models, including the refreshed Geely E5 (in some countries: Geely EX5, in China: Geely Galaxy E5). The car hasn’t changed much externally, but it has a larger battery (70 kWh), uses an 800 V architecture, and should be able to accept energy at a rate of up to 6 C. Interestingly, the older version will still remain in production.
