The Geely EX2 surpassed one million units after two years. This inexpensive electric car is competing with the BYD model.

On October 20, 2026, Geely produced its millionth unit of the Xingyuan model, which is sold outside China as the EX2. It took about two years for this small electric vehicle to reach that milestone, and in 2025 it was the best-selling car in the entire Chinese market.

The scale is impressive but requires clarification. The million units refer to production volume, not registrations or cars delivered to customers. Geely also did not disclose how many vehicles remain in China and how many have been exported.

Million produced, but not million sold

Xingyuan made its debut in China on October 9, 2024, as an urban electric vehicle competing primarily with BYD Seagull and Dolphin. Production grew rapidly. Geely surpassed 200,000 units by May 2025, 600,000 units by March 2026, and 800,000 units by August. Thus, the last 200,000 vehicles were produced within two months.

In December 2025, a figure of 500,000 units was also mentioned, but it referred to vehicles delivered to customers. It should not be directly compared with later production reports. The manufacturer itself claims that Xingyuan sells at an average rate of one unit per minute.

Behind this marketing slogan are concrete results. In 2025, the model achieved 465,775 retail registrations in China, the highest among all vehicles on that market—not just electric ones.

2026 has been a weaker year. From January to September, 310,391 units were sold, 9.6% less than the previous year. However, September saw 44,275 cars sold, marking Xingyuan’s best monthly performance this year. This was 11.66% higher than August, though still 7.91% lower than September 2025.

In September, this compact electric vehicle accounted for about 52% of all Geely Galaxy deliveries. It also held a significant lead in China’s A0 segment. Since the start of the year, BYD Dolphin has sold 116,606 units, while BYD Seagull has sold 83,604 units. These figures show that reaching one million units wasn’t solely due to inventory buildup at the factory.

Low price, rear-wheel drive, and up to 480 km CLTC range

The Xingyuan is based on the GEA platform and features an engine located at the rear. Depending on the version, it produces 58 kW or 85 kW, equivalent to 78 or 114 horsepower. Power is delivered to the rear wheels, with a multi-link suspension used at the back. The BYD Seagull and Wuling Bingo standardly use front-wheel drive along with a simpler steering rack.

The basic LFP batteries have capacities of 30.12 and 40.16 kWh. Geely sells them under the name Aegis Short Blade, and after an update in May 2026, it also mentioned the standard use of CATL cells. The range is 310 and 410 km according to the mild CLTC cycle. Based on rough conversions, this translates to approximately 254 and 336 km under WLTP standards, but these are not official European homologation results.

The May upgrade also introduced a version claiming 480 km of CLTC range, which would correspond to approximately 394 km under WLTP. Geely improved the powertrain, handling, driver assistance systems, and cabin. The Flyme Auto 2.0 multimedia system was also introduced.

The promotional price for the base version was 61,800 yuan, or about $9,200. This was 6% lower than before. The version with a 480 km range cost 86,800 yuan, or 83,800 yuan after local subsidies, which is around $12,500. However, Chinese prices cannot be directly converted to the European offering. Transport, customs duties, taxes, homologation, and importer margins must also be considered.

The body houses a 375-liter trunk space that increases to 1,320 liters when the seats are folded down. There is also a storage compartment in front with a capacity of 70 liters. For an affordable urban car, this is quite reasonable.

EX2 Expands Beyond China, But Brazil’s Situation Is Unclear

Under the name EX2, the vehicle has already appeared in Latin America, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the United Kingdom. In some markets, it is also available as the E2. In Malaysia, it is sold by Proton as the e.MAS 5. In the first half of 2026, the model attracted 10,665 buyers there and captured 33.6% of the electric vehicle market.

Local assembly in Purwakarta, Indonesia, began in January 2026. The situation in Brazil is less clear. One source states that production at the Renault and Geely facility started in June 2026. According to another report, Renault-Geely do Brasil only announced plans to begin operations at the Ayrton Senna complex in December on September 15. The available information does not clarify whether this refers to different stages of production rollout or a schedule change.

EX2 is now available in the United Kingdom as well, but Geely has not disclosed any plans for sales in the European Union or a timeline for entering Poland. Only the European price and certified range will show whether the formula for Xingyuan’s success can be replicated outside the highly competitive Chinese market.
