The used car market is weakening, but used electric cars are seeing strong growth.

The German used car market remained slightly below last year’s level in August 2026, according to market analyst Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT). According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, 502,435 used cars changed hands, 2.3 percent fewer than in August 2025. In total, 4,273,419 units were registered, meaning the market was 2.7 percent lower than during the same period last year.
The market for used electric cars has developed much more strongly. In the first seven months of last year, 124,000 used battery electric vehicles were recorded, while in the current corresponding period there were already over 200,000 units — a rise of nearly 64 percent. At the same time, prices for used electric cars have increased.
The supply of used electric cars has generally been limited but available over the past twelve months, with prices often remaining relatively moderate. Meanwhile, analysts say there are still many reservations regarding this technology. After fuel prices soared due to the Iran war, significantly more people became interested in electric drives. Additionally, the ongoing costs of an electric car can be reduced sooner compared to a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle.
According to DAT, there was a “full-blown rush for used electric cars” at that time, causing inventory levels at dealerships to drop disproportionately. More vehicles were sold than new ones arrived from used lease returns, resulting in a temporary shortage of supply. The need for professional advice remains high for dealers as more lease returns enter the market and the range of models with newer technology expands.
